Please see story for more details. The Port Pe Legion Squirts have brought home an- other OASA championship for the town of Port Perry. After watching the Midget team do it last weekend the boys really hoped to make it back to back wins for Port Perry Minor Soft- ball. The weather was perfect for baseball and the large crowds on hand at all the games were treated to some very good base- ball. The eight teams that were in the tournament were from Elmira, Meaford, St. Mary's, New Hamburg, Ernestown, Paris and Walkerton. Opening ceremonies were conducted by Wayne Venning with OASA tournament con- venor Carolyn Best. All teams participated and the fans were treated to a golden glove and ac- curacy throwing contest spon- sored by Team Canadian Tire. The first pitch was thrown by Vin Walker for the OASA and it was time to play ball. Port's first game was against Elmira. Chris Jones started at pitching for this game and fanned 11 batters while allow- ing only one hit. Mark Richard- son took over in the fifth inning and allowed one hit struck out two and walked four. They al- lowed Elmira only one run against them. Port came out very aggressively at the bat as they collected 14 hits. Darryl Dalton, Mike Versage, Ryan McQuade, Mark Richard- son and Chris Jones each col- lected two singles while Reid McTaggart had one. Chris Mon- Legion Squirts win All-Ontario crown sma and Sean Jeffrey each hit a double and Jeff Ashton hit a home run. The only base on balls that the Elmira pitcher gave up went to Chris Monsma. Final score Port Perry 9 - Elmi- ral. The next opponent was New Hamburg and the coaching staff knew that this would be a little bit different ball game. Chris Jones pitched the entire game allowing five hits while striking out 13 and giving up three walks. Defensive high- light of the game was a running diving catch made by Mike Ma- cLennan in right field to start the fourth inning. Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ash- ton reached base on errors in the second inning while Mark Richardson got on base as he was hit by a pitch. Ryan and Jeff scored on pass balls and Mark was hit home on a single by Mike MacLennan. In the fourth Reid McTaggart reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a hit by Mike Ma- cLennan and came home as the first baseman couldn't handle the throw on the attempt to get Mike out. In the fifth inning Mike Ver- sage hit a single and was forced out on a hit by Sean Jeffrey. Sean however was advanced on a single by Ryan McQuade and scored on a hit by Chris Jones that was bobbled by the centre fielder. Port allowed New Ham- burgone run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to leave the score at 6-2 for Port Perry. Sunday morning our first op- ponent was St. Mary's whom we had met in the fiffal of the Strat- ford tournamefit and we knew against a very clfer by the name of g. first innihg on an over throw by catcher Jeff Ashton trying to get the first batter of the day who had reached on a walk. St. Mary's scored another run in the second on a hit and another error so it was easy to see that the boys were a little nervous. Port didn't get on the score- board until the fifth when Chris Jones hit a single and Sean Jef- frey was put in as a pinch run- ner. The speedy Sean stole sec- ond, advanced to third and eventually scored on a pass ball. In the sixth inning Mike Ver- sage hit a single and Chris Mon- sma beat out a perfect bunt to get things going. Ryan McQuade hit a single and with the good base running that this team displays both Mike and Chris scored. Port by this time had settled down defensively and didn't allow St. Mary's to score any more runs. Ryan McQuade had an excellent game at shortstop with a good glove hand and strong accurate throws to gun down five run- ners at first base. Mike Versage was strong at third base as he picked up a bunt attempt and got the lead runner going to sec- ond. Chris pitched the entire game Turnto Page 34 Local rugby players win silver medals at Canada Games By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Ontario captured the games flag for the seventh consecutive year at the Canada Games, held this year in British Columbia, and three Scugog Township res- idents had a hand in bringing it home. Alan Foggetti and Lindsay Parry, of Port Perry, were both members of the silver-medal winning rugby team and Rick Finlay, also of Port Perry, was the coach of the gold medal win- ning women's softball team. Foggetti and Parry, both 18, are members of the Oshawa Vi- kings Rugby Club and are stu- dents at Port Perry High School. They called the trip and com- petition a great experience. Although Ontario was not ex- pected to win the gold in the rug- by championships, both Fogget- ti, a fly half and Parry, a hooker, were disappointed they didn't. The rugby squad, defeated Al- berta, Saskatchewan, then handed Quebec two losses, be- fore settling for the silver med- al, dropping the gold medal" match 23-14 to British Colum- Al Foggetti, left, and Lindsay Parry, both of Port Per bia. B.C. also defeated Ontario earlier in the games by a 21-18 margin. The womens' softball, coached by Finlay, who is cur- rently the coach of the Scugog Angels Fastball Club, defeated Saskatchewan 1-0 to take the gold medal. Ontario captured 272 points, to win the games flag. Ontario has won the flag 11 of the 14 times since the first Canada Gamesin 1967. Ontario won team titles in mens and womens rowing, womens swimming, mens vol- leyball, womens softball, mens cycling and mens waterskiing. Ontario concluded the 1993 games with 136 medals, consist- ing of 45 gold, 42 silver and 49 bronze. More than 300 athletes, coaches and managers from On- tario joined 4,000 others from across the country at the games, which are considered a training ground for international compe- titions such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and the Pan-American Games. KELLY LOWN/PORTPERRY STAR ry, re- turned home from the Canada Games with silver medals.
