This game showed what both teams had learned and improved on throughout the regular season about the fundamentals of base- ball as a great deal of them were covered in this single game. Even the players that had never played baseball on a team be- fore, shined in this one, as the chattering continued, in and off the field, throughout the six in- nings of play. These youngsters created never ending excite- ment and fun of the game for parents and coaches of both teams. Both teams putin a good effort into this game. Many great defensive plays were made throughout the game. Mathew Cracknell, playing right field for Van Camp made a great throw to home plate, catching the runner trying to score from second base, on a well hit single, Nathan Cook and Jameson Smith made some good defensive plays for Van Camp on the bases. Steven 'Schewaga caught a strong game for the Van Camp pitchers and he helped the team with three outs at home plate, one at which he had to dive toward the plate, tagging the runner on the ankle before he could score. Mikel Shisko playing second base had made three outstand- ing outs for Van Camp, one that was a bloop fly ball in the first inning with the bases loaded and two outs were caught by this youngster just before it touched the ground. Van Camp hits went to Ste- ven Trainor with two including a home run, Darren Millar also New playoff format greets fastball league The Oshawa City and Dis- trict League last week adopted a new playoff schedule that will involve all eight teams in the league and will start Monday night Aug. 30 at Durham Fields. The playoffs will be run like a double knock-out tournament with winning teams moving ahead and losers moving to the loser bracket. For example, the first place Greenbank Gam- blers will play the tail-end Bow- manville club in their first game and the result of that game will move the club either ahead to meet another winner or to come back through the los- er side. The advantage of this system will allow all teams to experi- ence some playoff action. The disadvantage is that all games will be played at Durham Fields with doubleheaders at 7 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Games will go at Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights until a winner is declared. Greenbank wound up their schedule last week with wins over Bowmanville and Port Perry Merchants. Jim Chilvers was the winner in Bowmanville while Mark Goreski started the Port Perry game. Bill Buys came on in relief in both games and pitched well. So, once again, the Gamblers won't be hosting playoff games in Greenbank Park but, hope- fully, next season will finally see a format for playoff games with two. Singles went to Mi- chael Giannini, Steven Schewa- ga, Jameson Smith, Mathew Cracknell, Ryan Kehoe, An- drew Kenny, Andrew McMillan and Scott McCoshen. Van Camp won 19-8. Van Camp Contracting vs Coffee Time 10-10 tie Van Camp Contracting host- ed Coffee Time in the second playoff game which proved to be the most exciting. During the regular season these two teams had split their games Van Camp losing 9-8 in the first game and winning 9-7 in the second. The best team play yet was displayed by the Van Camp youngsters in this game. All Van Camp players showed a lot of character, patience and de- termination in this game. Being down 4-0 at the end of the first inning of play, 7-1 after two, and 8-5 at the end of the third, these youngsters never gave up as the encouragement to each other by all players in and off the field, for the entire game, made this rally happen. In the fourth inning Van Camp tied the score 9-9 and went ahead 10-9 in the fifth. Mi- chael Giannini showed some outstanding pitching as Van Camp's closer only allowed one run in the two innings pitched, striking out six of the nine bat- ters faced. Van Camp hits went to Jame- son Smith, Darren Millar each with two, Nathan Cook, Mi- chael Giannini, Steven Schewa- ga and Ryan Kehoe adding sin- gles. Coffee Time hits went to Don Campbell with three including a home run, Mark Walhout with two and James Baran with one. at home. (However, Durham Fields is only 20 minutes away.) This weekend the Gamblers are at Fenelon Falls for the three-day tournament. Sept. 17, 18, 19, sees the team at Wa- terloo for the O.A.S.A. Interme- diate "A" Championships and the following weekend the Greenbank team travel to Min- Van Camp victorious Coffee Time hosted Van Camp Contracting in the B Di- vision finals on Aug. 28. These two teams being close in regular season and playoffs, Coffee Time got home team advantage by half a point as Van Camp was up to bat first. Coffee Time's pitcher Donald Campbell started out strong striking out the first batter he faced, then receiving some great defensive plays for the next two outs to blank Van Camp after one inning of play. Nathan Cook was almost as im- pressive in the first, giving up one run and stranding two run- ners on bases before striking out the sixth batter he faced to end the inning. Van Camp's pitcher got help from the defence as Ryan Kehoe running to catch a fly ball and held on to the ball as two players collided 'falling to the ground. Van Camp's team spirit was high for this final game. Van Camp had 12 hits and scored 20 runs in this game. The great pitching by Nathan Cook, Darren Millar and Michael Giannini helped hold Coffee Time batters to only three hits and seven runs. There were sev- en great defensive plays in this game that contributed to Van Camp's 20-7 win. Congratula- tions and great team work. Coffee Time hits went to Mark Walhout with two and Donald Campbell with one. Van Camp hits went to Dar- ren Millar with a triple and two singles, Michael Giannini a double and a single, Andrew Kenny with two singles, other singles went to Ryan Kehoe, Nathan Cook, Steven Schewa- ga, Jameson Smith and Scott McCoshen. den for a season-ending two- day tournament. A fine job last week by Gam- bler assistant coach, Don Phin- ney, who donned the catchers equipment for back-tn-harl- games last week to replace the honeymooning Paul Goreski. Good job, Don! Cobourg edges Scugog Angels This past weekend was the Durham Ladies Fastball League "Playoff Tournament" and Cobourg "Angels" defeated their namesake, the Scugog "Angels" of Port Perry 3-1in the semi-final game on Sunday. Oshawa Double "B"s were crowned league champions as they defeated Cobourg 3-1. The Scugog "Angels" opened up the scoring in the first in- ning, against Cobourg, with Tracy Smith leading off with a walk. She advanced to third on Laurie Dudgeon's single, then scored on Gena Spence' flyball out to centre field. Janie Thorn- ton then singled before the in- ning ended. Cobourg hurler Cindy Rousseau then allowed the "Angels" only three more hits for the rest of the game.
