PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 31,1993 - 3 J PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Everything old is new again There were plenty of smiles at Brock's Department Store last Friday evening as the Brock family held a special open house at their newly renovated premises. A large gathering of friends, statf and business colleagues toured the building which has been transformed into a bright, spacious store while retaining the historic nature and feeling of the business. Above are Bill, Marina and Claudette Brock happily toasting the new look. Marina Brock is the fifth generation to take over the 112-year old family business. 5: MATTHEW JONES - age 8 - - 2 LOCATIONS - - HIRYU BUSHIDO KAI WI ETR EIN: Vg CEO) (=F Two old, vacant houses at the corner of Mary and John St. may soon have a date with a bulldozer if IGA owner Jim Wants work done on Ma Brown's Rd. A former Scugog councillor, Don Cochrane, came before council Monday afternoon to discuss concerns with his form- er colleagues. A 20 year resident of Ma Brown's Road on Scugog Island, Mr. Cochrane and his neigh- bours wanted to know when the road was going to be paved. He said the condition of the road every spring of the year is a real quagmire, blaming increased volumes of traffic and school buses as the main causes. Councillor Harvey Graham, chairman of roads committee, told Mr. Cochrane Ma Brown's Rd. was not in the works for this year, and said although it was one of the top three priority projects in budget talks, there would not be enough money to fix the road this year. "I know some people think we're asking for "me first," but the residents on the road are so far behind everyone else in the township it just appears that way," Mr. Cochrane said. "The only privilege we get is being able to drive on fifth-class road," he said. Councillor Graham said the road was discussed this year, but both Portview Beach Rd. and Carnegie Reach Rd. were ahead in priorities. He assured Mr. Cochrane that Ma Brown's Road would be top priority dur- ing next years budget dis- cussions. ] KARATE Men ~ Women ~ Children INTRODUCTORY COURSE 19.95 Learn about Karate before yout join 15258 Simcoe St., Port Perry 985-0205 73 Brock St. W,, Ohdolqlele[-R: 1 LRc ofe ke! Grieve has his way. Mr. Grieve attended council on Monday afternoon to seek councils permission to remove the homes and construct a 17 to 20 car parking lot. Solicitor Michael Fowler told council they needed a prelimi- nary indication on the project, before Mr. Grieve would be willing to waive the conditions on the offer to purchase. Mr. Fowler said one of the houses would require a re-zon- ing as it was presently desig- nated C-6 and would require a = FI 5 Herbally Yours 143 Perry St., Port Perry | More parking for downtown? full C-3 zoning to allow the parking lot. He also stressed they were working under a tight schedule as Mr. Grieve would like to tie- in his parking lot with the one being constructed by Big V, just beside the project. He said the space would be used primarily by IGA staff. Plans are for considerable buf- fering along Mary St., which would include three new trees, a six foot hedge and low ground coverage. Entrance to the lot would be from John Street. 7 N_-- <= SRY NY a) 'I9L 1B8 ~~ 985-0861 AL ERE) § {GMA HT TCEQ (CE STO DIO) § Healthy & Natural Products D q.
