B 3 19 i "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 31,1993 - 5 Church restoration on schedule, but over budget By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star "They don't make things like they used to" doesn't quite ring true for a local church's restora- tion project. In the case of the Head Church project they are "re- building it better than before," claims Lake Scugog Historical Society President Paul Arculus. The church is currently un- dergoing a major reconstruction project which includes raising the building, replacing the floor beams, replacing the siding, re- placing the glass and re- painting the building. The project began in June and is expected to be completed by the end of September. Although the project is going according to schedule and is 75 per cent completed, ithas farex- ceeded its budget. According to Mr. Arculus, they are approximately 80 per cent over budget. The original price was set at $19,000, excluding wages for the six laborers, but the cost is now expected to be more than double by its completion. Mr. Arculus said the cost overrun occurred when it was discovered more of the floor beams were in need of replacing than was originally thought. This was not known until the building was raised. Modern washrooms will be added, also not in the original plans. Mr. Arculus maintains that the additional costs were all needed to restore the church to itsoriginal state. "If it hadn't been done now, we would have lost the build- ing," he said. Additional beams made of Douglas fir have been used due toits longevity. "We're ensuring that restora- tion won't be needed for another 100 years," Mr. Arculus said. Experts in the field also agree that the additional costs were needed. SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Paul Arculus has been keeping a close watch on the restoration of the Head Church at Scugog Shores Museum. "I don't know whether it was coincidence or good faith that we chose to do the project this year," Mr. Arculus said. Despite being over budget, Mr. Arculus is confident all costs will be met. "We have covered all costs to date. We have no accumulating overruns and we are meeting costs on a daily basis." But the historical society is appealing to the community for help. "The community has been really generous and respon- sive," he said. "We have had all kinds of absolutely positive re- sponse from the community." This includes money, services and materials. Once the actual restoration of the building is completed, the historical society will turn 1ts attention to the adjoining ceme- tery. Plans include replacing the headstones, and construct- ing a picket fence and board- walk. This, Mr. Arculus said, will" add dignity to the cemetery."
