8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 31,1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Te Letters to the editor Need policies which support growth To the Editor: I read the lead story on yes- terday's Toronto Star. There was a picture of a well fed Tory cabinet minister stating that there was NO money for job creation in the next Tory gov- ernment. The government would continue to follow the same economic programs in the next term. I threw' the paper down in disgust. Where has this minister of the crown been for the last three years, certainly not in Victoria - Haliburton. One doesn't have to be a cabinet minister to see the empty factories and stores in our towns and villages. Unem- ployment figures run well over 30 per cent in Haliburton county and there are over 2,000 people without work in Victor- ia. These are real people with families and not just a statistic. They are our friends, our neigh- bors and even our family and we know the suffering they feel by growth in the small business sector. We need changes in our banking system to encourage investment in small business. We need effective support of in- dustries as they compete on the international markets. We can not sit back and let our friends and family suffer. With less jobs, there is less money to spend on goods and services. Just ask our shop keepers and small business peo- ple, the impact that unemploy- ment has had on their business. We can no longer allow an in- sensitive Tory government to impose economic policies that are tearing the soul out of our It'stime for a REAL change! communities.
