Letters to the editor Voters have a serious obligation To the Editor: On Wednesday, Sept. 8 our prime minister announced that we will be involved in a Federal Election on Oct. 25. Some of us no doubt, believe that there will be far too much time for cam- paigning and electioneering and perhaps they are correct. Nevertheless, I would like to suggest that we voters have a serious obligation. We should know as much as we possibly can about each of the candi- PORT PERRY LaNCSCATNE SUPPLIES 985-7727 Hours: Monday to Friday 8 to 6; Saturday 8 to 5 1 mile west of Dumpon = Reach Rd. #8 (south side) dates before we vote. We should listen to their speeches, enquire about their backgrounds and learn as much as we can through the media about their policies and their intentions. We need to remember that the winner is going to work for us and we are going to pay a very large salary plus terrific fringe benefits. The govern- ment doesn't Have any money. It is our money that they spend, so we want to be sure that we hire the best candidate, the one who will do the best job for us. In order to accomplish this we must know as much as possible about each of the candidates, we must make an unbiased choice and then we must vote. I have heart it said that every country has the government that it deserves. Let us make sure that we deserve the best. Cochrane Court Immac- ulate Conception Senior Citi- zens Residence was officially opened on Sunday, Sept. 12. The project, which has been in the La since 1987, was conceived after research showed there was a need for af- fordable rental housing for sen- ior citizens in Port Perry. The residence was the dream of the late Joseph D. Cochrane and Father Alfred Grima. Un- der their leadership and the hard work of the building com- mittee, consisting of William Barr, Paul Gouin, Dr. Marie Moreland, John Neil, Joe O'Reilly, Myles O'Riordan and Ina Sutherland, the dream be- came a reality. Seyeral politicians were on hand Sunday to offer congratu- lations to those involved in the project. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall, Durham MP Ross Steven- son and Jenny Yorgason, repre- senting Durham East MPP Gord Mills, were on hand for the ribbon cutting. A sod turning for the new resi- officially opened Sept, { 12 dence was held June 23, 1991. The complex includes 38 apart- ments, 29 of which are allocated to low-income seniors, with the remaining offered at rents based on comparable private ac-- commodations in the area. : Thirty-six of the apartments are one bedroom and two have two bedrooms. The $3.3 million capital cost of the project was met with a mortgage loan from Ontario Housing Corporation, which ob- tained the funds from the Cana- da Pension Plan. The project was developed by a non-profit housing corpora- tion fostered by the local parish in co-operation with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese which have leased the church's lands to the housing corporation for the project. Construction began in Au- gust, 1991 and was completed in the fall of 1992 when tenants- moved into the building. The capital cost of the project was $3,642,464 financed entirely through the Ontario Ministry of Housing "Homes Now" Program with a 35-year mortgage. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
