Beaton's blast saves day Gamblers advance to the City League finals The Oshawa City and Dis- trict Fastball League semi-final game last Thursday night in Greenbank promised to be an exciting affair as the Gamblers hosted the All-Ontario Junior "A" champs, the Oshawa Dou- ble "B" Club. The winner of this game would advance directly to the league finals while the loser would have to battle it out with two other teams to reach the fi- nal. Both ball clubs wanted to win this game badly and to their credit they put on an exciting, superbly played exhibition of how fastball should be played. Neither team committed an error; both teams received good pitching and it was apparent early in the game that it would be close. Jim Chilvers took the mound for Greenbank with Phil Yahn pitching for Oshawa. In the second inning Oshawa clean up hitter Mike Dingman hit a mammoth home run to left field to give double "B" a 1-0 lead. The Gamblers threatened in the third as Trevor Till belted a triple followed by a pair of walks to load the bases but Yahn pitched his way out of trouble, by retiring Paul Gore- ski on a long fly ball to right field for the third out. But in the fifth inning Trevor Till led off with his second hit of the night and scored when Don With two well-played games this past week, the Port Perry Midget Merchants exited the Oshawa Men's Fastball League playoffs. Although they did not win these games, they put up a good fight and lost by only one run in each match. Playing in the men's league this year has had a positive effect on the mid- gets and the increased level of play has noticeably improved their skills and experience. To- wards the end of the season, the Merchants entered each game with confidence that they could win against opponents who, at the first of the year, intimidated them. On Tuesday, the Merchants played Oshawa "BB" who quick- ly scored three runs in the first. The Midgets fought back and were leading 7-6 in the fifth in- ning before Oshawa made a pitching change. In the bottom of the seventh, Oshawa was able to score two runs with two oyt to win the game 8-7. Jeff ard pitched seven innings, triking out four, walking three, and allowed five earned runs. Coming off this disappointing loss, the Merchants met the tough Oshawa Weasels team on Wednesday. This game turned out to be a pitcher's duel. Chad Venning pitched seven strong innings, striking out three, walking two, allowing only two hits and no earned runs berore being relieved by Denis Smith. Smith entered the game under tough conditions with bases loaded and none out, and the score still tied at 0. He immedi- ately struck out two batters and Beaton caught all of a Yahn fast ball and lined it out of the ball Bgl and the Gamblers had a 2- 1lead. Oshawa threatened in the sixth with runners on first and third but Chilvers got the third out on a shortstop to first play. In the seventh Oshawa went down in order and Greenbank werein the final. | Other Gambler hits went to Terry Till, Steve Durham and Bill Buys while Kevin Gibson, Rob Gray and Brad Bricknell also hit safely for Oshawa. So this week sees Oshawa O'Tooles meet the Oshawa Weasles on Monday night at Durham Fields at 7 p.m. The winner of this sudden death game will play Oshawa Double "B" on Tuesday night at Durham Field at 7 p.m. and whoever wins that game will meet Greenbank Gamblers for the league title. N The game(s) will be played at Greenbank Park on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Gamblers have not lost so far in the double knockout tournament so their opponent must beat them twice ~ toclaim the championship. This Friday the Gamblers travel to Linwood (north of Wa- terloo) to contest the O.A.S.A. ~ Inter. "A" Championship with their first game to be played Fri- day night in Linwood at 7 p.m. against Rockford. '; Midget Merchants bow out of playoffs Card caught a sizzling line drive at third for the final out. This caused the teams to go into extrainnings using the Interna- tional Tie-breaker Rule which places the last out at second base. The Weasels were able to bring home their runner in this well played game, causing the Merchants to exit this year's playoffs. i Hitters for the week: Card - single, home run, three RBI; Empringham - single, RBI; Laird - walk, single; McBride - two singles; Moase - single, triple, RBI; Smart - single, dou- ble, triple, two RBI, Smith - sin- gle; Vander Slagt - walk, Ven- ning - single.
