PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Rotary's Top Award Bernie Chandler, a nine-year member of the Rotary Club of Port Perry was honored Saturday at the club's annual Past President's Night by being named the recipient of the Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow Award. Mr. Chandler has served seven years as a director and the past six as treasurer. In receiving the medal and certificate he expressed his surprise, saying his selection was a great honor which he valued very highly. Two men arrested in hit and run death Durham Regional Police have arrested two Oshawa men in connection with the hit-and-run death of a Whitby man. Gordon Douglas Gibson, 29, was killed after being struck by a vehicle on September 3. Colin James Robson, 19, and Dwayne Eddy Verge, 19, have been charged by police and are being held for a bail hearing. Mr. Robson has been charged with failing to stop after an acci- dent, criminal negligence caus- ing death, and impaired opera- tion of a motor vehicle causing death. Mr. Verge faces two accessory charges of failing to stop after an accident and criminal negli- gence causing death. 5 " MEAT PIES go otMeat ings The intersection of Queen and Water Street came under fire again Monday afternoon when councillors received a copy of a report from the Region which said it could not support an all- way stop at the controversial intersection. Dave McMullen, traffic engineer with Durham Region said "there is not a safety pro- blem at the intersection," base- ing his statement on a technical report undertaken by his department. But Councillor Pearce said she disagreed and so did three other councillors around the table. "We feel there is a problem at this intersection and much con- fusion, especially with traffi¢ turning south onto Water St. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 14,1993 - 3 Corner to be studied again! The corner needs some control, especially for pedestrains to cross the road," she said. Mr. McMullen said he had no problem in eliminating the "U- turn," if council felt it was a problem, and agreed to take another look 'at the corner and make some recommendations to council on how to make the corner less confusing. Council expects a report back from Mr. McMullen in about one month. ' Golf course proposal near Utica A golf course proposal for a farm located on Regional Rd. 21 between Manchester and Utica came under scrutiny of area res- idents at a public meeting at council Monday. An 18-hole golf course, to be known as Utica Pines Golf Club, is proposed for a 163 acre parcel of land. But a number of area resi- dents were in attendance to voice their concerns. These ranged from fears of water shortages, chemical polution, traffic, noise problems and cat- tle getting onto the course. The developers listened to the residents concerns and said they would work with them and council to make sure the project would be viable for everyone. "We want to be good neigh- bours," he said.
