"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 14,1993 - 7 Letter to the editor Responding to Aldred"s letter To the Editor: The first point I would like to make is that Mr. Aldred objects to funding that is set aside for First Nations only. Since we have had little fund- ing in the past, it is finally our turn. In fact, most First Nations already have had business offic- es, halls and economic develop- ment projects up and running for years before we were able to obtain any funding for these purposes. The fact that we are a small group should not deny us these privileges and rights. Ironically as an example of this, in the early 1950s we need- ed to put our farm up for sale in order to improve our housing. Joel Aldred (in his former wife's name for some reason), took full advantage of that situation, buying the land at the price of $12,000. Over the years could this be called freeloading at anyone's expense? Especially since he then oftered to sell it back to us for $900,000 in 1991. Now, talk about a lot of mney for a small "band." Where on earth would we raise that kind of money, land-locked on an is- land and therefore without re- sources? I assume he thought we would get help from the De- partment of Indian Affairs, which he calls the "taxpayers." As for his figures, they are what 1s outlandish. Maybe he got. them from his imaginary "De- partment of Indian and Eskimo Affairs," which allegedly was the great election idea he had, . way back when. In regard to your new "organ- ization," with your track record on other issues (library, etc.) it 1s our sincere hope that you will be its' president. The Mississauga's of Scugog Island First Nation are a proud, progressive group. We will con- tinue to improve our lot in life Give vote serious consideration To the Editor: You must be aware that the date for a federal election has been set for Oct. 25, 1993. It is time to give serious considera- tion to the policies and electoral promises the various parties will be proposing in this 47 day campaign. It should be noted that a polit- ical election such as we are now in is not a beauty contest. Elect- ing a leader with the biggest smile or nicest legs does not nec- essarily translate into policies that are in your opinion the most beneficial policies for you and your country. Neither is a political election a horse race or sports event in which one tries to project a winner and places his/her ballot in favor of his/her guess so as not to lose his/her/ vote. What is the sense in pick- ing a winner if that winner and his/her government enact a se- ries of legislation that is harm- ful to the majority of Canadians but beneficial to the corporate few. (e.g. the Mulroney- Campbell drug patent Protec- tion Act). I urge you to look closely at Audrey McLaughlin's policy statements and decide that Lucy Rybka-Becker is the can- didate in Durham riding who will bring your concerns before parliament during the next four or five years. Roy Grierson, Port Perry while at the same time sharing our new facilities and projects with all the people of Scugog Township who care to work with us. Joel Aldred continues to exhibit the racial ignorance, and greed he brought with him when he moved here in the 1950s. Yours truly, Chief Gary Edgar, B.A,E.D.O,,F.B.I Animal shelter has busy month During the month of July three dogs and five cats were destroyed at the Uxbridge- Scugog Animal Shelter.
