"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" WAR A ERE A Cr eh HAE { a PAR Le RE PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 21,1993 - 11 Letters to the editor No way sculpture can be construed as obscene To the Editor: Last week, on invitation from the directors of Durham Art Fest, I installed my seven- metre high wire frame sculp- ture of a pregnant woman in the Atrium of the Michael Starr Building in downtown Oshawa. Initially, when the powers that control that building heard of the nature of the sculpture, I was told it could not be in- stalled. Under pressure, they fi- nally consented to let it be in- stalled in this public space. . The reason they gave for not initially allowing the piece to be installed was that the social contract recently put in place by Bob Rae's government had dev- estated the morale of the em- ployees and this piece might up- set the employees too much. The sculpture can in no way be construed as obscene (to me, it is easier to consider the per- manent phallic sculpture there as obscene). The pregnant lady real point of this letter is not about the sculpture, it is about how insulated these particular civil servants are from the real world. The building has to be the highest quality workplace in Oshawa. It is a Hyatt Regency environment, they are paid higher than any averages you want to look at, they have had Job security, a benefit package and retirement plan that guar- antees them more than food on the table and a roof for the rest of their earthly life. Their job is collecting taxes. Meanwhile, the rest of Oshawa is full of va- cant buildings, graphic.imagery of the private sector businesses that lie wounded and bleeding throughout the province. These are times of not recession - but depression. When I was told how the civil servants were so depressed be- cause they would have to take 12 days off this year without 1g done in a tasteful way. The Letters to Editor Policy While the Port Perry Star encourages Letters to the Editor, we reserve the right to edit any letter which becomes too personal in nature, and any letter we fe€l contains libelous or defamatory comments In recent weeks the Port Perry Star has received some very angry letters concerning land on Scugog Island. We understand public meetings are being organized and the Star will cover these meetings. But in an effort to end the hostilities between the parties concerned, the Port Perry Star will no longer publish letters on this subject until after the meetings are held. We feel the Letters to the Editor column is an important forum to allow differing views to be aired, but insist that the letters be factual, written in good taste and deal only with the subject at In the case of the issue mentioned above, we feel both parties have had an opportunity to present their case, and until the meetings are held, there is no need to carry on this debate knowing the hard feelings it is causing to many people. J. Peter Hvidsten Publisher pay, my mind flashed to all those out there from the private sector whose jobs, careers, and businesses have vanished and now stand in the bread lines. I just could not believe that my sculpture, which depicts nothing more than a healthy woman and a healthy male fe- tus within her, would trip off ,anything major amongst these ivory tower dwellers. . It is ironic that the Michael Starr building is hosting a sem- inar on pregnancy later this Enough of the Aldred-Edgar feud To the Editor: I read with great interest a reply to the ongoing and ridicu- lous in-the-paper feud of one Joel Aldred and the Scugog Is- land Mississaugas, by Wendy Hawkin. My comment is this. If Joel Aldred wishes to continue with his desire to reform a group of law abiding citizens then he should be running for a seat in the federal government. As he professes to be an ac- tive Big C conservative with a John Diefenbaker silo on his farm, perhaps he should run against the incumbent in our area for the nomination. = Surely he is aware that any THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM "NOTICE OF MEETING consider at a meeting to be held on: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1993 AT 9:00AM PLANNING DEPARTMENT BOARDROOM 1615 DUNDAS STREET EAST, WHITBY Requests which have been submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs to refer whole or part of the Durham Regional Official Plan (1991) under Section 17 of the Planning Act, 1990.
