ATED IN uy | ROYAL LEPAGE EN Scugog Township realtors will be joining cofwmunities across the province to celebrate home ownership during Ontario Home Week, September 26 to October 2. Home ownership meet the communities' needs in many dif- ferent ways. For example, a home provides a safe haven where families can be raised, it provides a canvas where artistic talents can be experimented with, as well as escaping from this sometimes frustrating world. One of the fascinating aspects of home ownership is it's uniqueness to each homeowner. For instance, consider a row of townhouses. They all share the same basic design, but that is where the similarity ends. Upon a closer look, one will notice that each home is distinct, reflecting the personality of each homeowner. This is what makes home owpership so exciting. If's the opportunity to transform a home into a place that is unique to each family. THE RIGHT TO OWN PROPERTY Ontario Home Week was first celebrated in 1980. At that time, the event was called Private Property Week. It earned that name because it was launched to bring the issue of property rights to the attention of the public and to work towards guaranteeing these rights in the Constitution. The term "property rights" refers to the right to own, build upon, develop, sell, use or bequeath real estate. Even though Canada has a Constitution with a Charter of Rights to protect fundamental 1 and freedoms, the right to private property is not included. As a result, governments have overturned the rights of property owners on numerous occasions. Common examples are home- owners who have suffered per- sonal and financial hardship when land was expropriated by the government to build a high- way or widen a road. To protect homeowners from similar situa- tion, Realtors throughout the province have been working toward guaranteeing property rights in the Constitution, and have also asked the public to join in the battle. During Ontario Home Week, Realtors across the province con- tinue to promote awareness of property right. They have also expanded the event to celebrate the many benefits of home ownership. The theme for this year's event is "Home ownership...feel Scugog Township Realtors observe 13th Annual "Ontario Home Week" the pride." Pride of ownership is reflected in the way care is tak- en in homes. As homeowners, a great deal of time is spent on the home because it represents a major accomplishment and investment. The sacrifices that are made to accumulate a down payment and become a first-time buyer, and the pride that home- owners have when looking at their home and knowing that their family has a place of their own are the reasons for pride of home ownership. The benefits of home owner- ship are truly wide and varied. Joinus in celebrating the joy of i home ownership brn R pores 5 feos Ss po Ho HOME WEEK SEPTEMBER 26-OCTOBER 2, 1993 va In addition to pride, homes give their owners other emotional benefits such as security and joy. It is no wonder that home ownership makes the owners feel so secure; after all, owning a home opens up many doors to the future. The key to those doors is the increasing equity that builds up in the home. That equity helps to achieve many goals such as trading up to larg- er homes, building up retirement incomes, or helping children realize their dreams. There is no doubt that a home also brings joy into home- owners' lives. It is a place where birthday parties. are celebrated, family reunions or personal tri- umphs such as a new job or childrens' first steps take place. STRONG COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY Home ownership not only has a positive impact on families, but on communities as well. As a homeowner, roots are estab- lished and a large financial investment into the community is made when homes are purchased. This fosters a strong commit- ment to the community, which is reflected in the time which homeowners spend working with other community members to ensure it is a place everyone can be proud of. Realtors are fortunate to get to know members of their com- munity through their business activities. One of the most rewarding aspects of their pro- fession is the privilege of work- ing with these people to help them realize their dream of home ownership. The Realtors of Scugog Township are proud to service this community and take this opportunity to thank the home- owners for the contributions which help to make Scugog a better place to live.
