Gamblers end season | Fred Nagle, Brian Wright, Wayne Addison, on high and low note An eventful and entertaining fastball season came to a close for the Greenbank Gamblers Saturday night in St. Clements at the Ontario Intermediate "A" Fastball Championships. A hectic week for the Gam- blers began Wednesday night in Greenbank when the Gamblers and the Oshawa Double "B" Juniors met for the title of the Oshawa City and District Fast- ball League. The Double "B" Club had de- feated O'Tooles on Monday and the Oshawa Waltzing Weasels on Tuesday for the right to chal- lenge Greenbank for the City League Championship. Double "B" would have to defeat the Gamblers twice to win the crown since Greenbank had come through the playoff for- mat undefeated and in game one at Greenbank Park they de- feated the (zamblers soundly by L a final score of 11-5. The Oshawa team caught Mark Go- reski on a "cold" night (the tem- perature hovered just slightly above freezing) and clouted no less than five home runs off the combined offerings of Goreski and Bill Buys. Phil Yahn was the winning pitcher. The Oshawa win set up the second game of the double head- er as a "winner take all" event and in this game it was Green- bank's Jim Chilvers opposing Double "B's" Brad Bricknell as the opposing pitcher. In the early going it seemed like Greenbank would win handily as they sported 5-0 and 6-2 leads during the game. But in the top of the seventh inning the gritty Juniors rallied for three runs (with two out) to send the contest into extra in- nings. In the bottom of the eighth in- ning Terry Till was on base due to being hit by a pitch and with two out Trevor Till delivered a dramatic two run homer over the left center field fence to se- cure the leaglie championship over a talented'QOshawa Double "B" squad. (An §xcellent game to finish the City:League Sea- son). N Jim Chilvers went the route for the Gamblers while Terry Till, Chilvers and Paul:Goreski each had a pair of hits for the winners. Steve Durham, Trevor Till (with his home run), Don Beaton, Brian Till and Bill Buys each hit safely for Greenbank.' Brad Bricknell, Rob Gray and Mike Dingman led the awa attack with two hits each. "Oh, yes, along with another lady Tara Justin McDonald, our bat gifl from Charlottetown, P.E.I who just happened to be our flag bearer in the opening ceremo- nies on Friday night.
