Council passed a bylaw last week which would allow the retirement home to be built on a parcel of land on Casimir St. The by-law rezones four sepa- rate lots on the south side of Casimir St. to RM4-7 for the specific use of a retirement home. Earlier this year, council was approached with a proposal to construct a seniors assisted liv- Regional councillors support waste reduction challenge It will be community against community in a waste reduction battle next month. Durham Regional Council threw its support behind a unique competition during Waste Reduction Week sched- uled for October 4 to 10. According to Joe Dickson, the co-ordinator of the contest, the communities will be pitted against one another to deter- mine who has achieved the highest percentage of waste re- duction over the past year. A weigh-in will be conducted and the winner will be deter- mined on a per capita basis. The region's Works Department will oversee the contest. "We know the Region of Dur- ham is a leader in waste reduc- tion," Mr. Dickson told council- lorslast week while pitching the idea. A similar contest was held last year between Pickering and Ajax.
