Next week Bell Canada will change your telephone area code to 905, to help distribute the tremendous load now being carried by 416. The change of code numbers takes place on Monday, Oct. 4, 1998, and will effect all areas outside of Metropolitan Toronto presently being served by the 416 area code. The 416 area code is running out of telephone numbers. This is due to the present and pro- jected growth in demand for basic telephone service, as well as other services like cellular, facsimile and pagers. This is the first area code split in Canada, however, many successful area code splits have occurred in the United States (e.g., New York City, California, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Colorado). Calls which you can make to- day without incurring long dis- tance charges will remain toll- free. However, your dialing of calls will change in some cases: 1. If you place a local call from 416 into the 905 area code you will dial: 905 + the local seven digit number, 2. If you place a local call from 905 into the 416 area code you will dial: 416 + the local seven digit number, 3. If you place a local call from within the 416 or 905 area code, you will dial the seven digit lo- cal number. Local calls that require 10 digit dialing are NOT long dis- tance. No long distance charges' apply, therefore, for 10 digit -lo- onl walls. a calls 'will continue to require 1 or 0 (for operator assisted calls) plus the area code and the seven dig- it number. With less than a week to go- before the area code split, it is important that all businesses are aware and plan for the changeover. Things to consider include: + Inform employees, custom- ers, suppliers and contacts, + Revise stationery, packag- ing, signage to show your new area code (business cards, in- voices, brochures, company ve- hicles, etc.), + Plan to reprogram equip- - ment which stores/dials tele- phone numbers (i.e. fax, speed calling, alarm systems, call for- warding, pagers), + Remember to convert files which include telephone num- bers on your computer system (i.e. company personnel records, customer databases, Soper and network servic- es), + Check directory listings and advertising. Residential customers should make sure their friends and relatives, including those overseas, are aware if their - area code changes. Your per- sonal telephone directory, com- puter files, speed calling, emer- gency numbers, medic alert card, personal cheques, etc. should all be updated to reflect the new 905 area code.
