In 1991, there were 6,779 deaths from the flu and pneu- monia. The two illnesses are the combined leading cause of death in adults 65 years and old- er. Between 1990-1991 there were an estimated 1,012,378 hospital days due to the two with the hospitalization costing $470 million. The overwhelm- ing majority of these deaths (85 per cent) are those over the age of 65. Pneumonia is a leading cause of death by infectious disease in Canada. It is the most common complication of the flu, with the main causes being bacteria, vi- ruses and modified bacteria called mycplasmas. Since the early 1960s pneumonia has been second only te lung cancer as a leading cause of death relat- ed to respiratory diseases. The optimal influenza vacci- nation period is October. The vaccine is made from inactivat- ed viruses, so no one can get the flu from the flu shot. The shot. must be given once a year, be- cause the strain changes annu- ally. The vaccine lasts about one year and protects you against three different strains of the vi- rus. This year's prevalent strains are A Singapore, B Pan- ama and the A Beijing. It is best to beimmunized ear- ly, as the shot takes two weeks to take effect. - The side-effects are minimal, if any occur. Fever, malaise and myalgia may occur within one to two days after vaccination, es- pecially in young adults who have received the whole-virus vaccine. In children two to 12, fever and local reaction are no more frequent after administra- tion of split-virus vaccine than a placebo injection. For those un- der 24 months of age, the fever occurs more often but is seldom severe. Allergic responses are rare and are probably a consequence of hypersensitivity, to some vac- cine component, most likely re- sidual egg protein, which is Present in minute quantities. he vaccine should not be taken by those with known anaphylac- tic hypersensitivity to eggs manifested as hives, swelling of the mouth and throat, difficulty in breathing, hypotension and shock. : By Last year the flu season 'be- gan in September with ver mild activity occuring thro to :the end of December.
