Thomas (From the Hip) along with David Bar- low . The following is a look at how the upcoming chronicle cameto be. By Joan Scapillato Baseball. An intelligent, spe- cialized sport filled with glamor and excitement. An enormous industry that employs thou- sands and generates millions. A highly paid profession that holds out the promises of an op- ulent lifestyle to those who make it. Baseball is all that and more. Itis the stuff that dreams are made of. Wainfleet humorist and ob- server of life, the writer William J. Thomas, looks at the baseball phenomenon and is over- whelmed by the determination of young men who spend their prime years in competition for a place in the field. He and direc- tor David Barlow have written a commentary which chronicles what he has seen. Catching the Dream will be aired on CBC on October 3 at 8:30 p.m. "Although the background is baseball," Thomas says the sub- Jectis dreams." The dreams of 7,000 Ameri- can and Caribbean boys and young men in 130 minorleagues vying for positions at the top. Youthful dreams which color the reality of the minors, where most will spend up to six years, far from home, travelling by bus on bumpy backroads to play in lousy ballparks, filled with emp- ty stands. They will stay in -cheap hotels, eat mediocre food and get paid a pittance for the privilege of improving them- selves while competing with a steady stream of younger, fresh- er recruits for a shot at the big time. What amazes Thomas is that the odds never discourage them. "Only a small, select group will make it to the top," he says, 1994 Membership Applications Rate If Paid By Membership Description 1994 Rate November 15, 1993 FULL MEMBERSHIP Mens $625. Dawn till Dusk "and they all assume they are the chosen few." For this documentary, three members of the St. Catharines Blue Jays were chosen to repre- sent all minor league players. With their film crew, Barlow and Thomas followed pitcher Harry Muir of Delaware, Onta- rio, outfielder Shannon Stewart from Miami and infielder Eddy Vasquez from Santo Domingo (who never made it to St. Catha- rines), to their homes, where they talked with parents, and to spring training, where they in- terviewed trainers and manag- ers. They filmed top secret cor- porate meetings and attached radio mikes to some players and managers to overhear conversa- tions. They got a "realistic slice of life," Thomas says, of a major league prospect in a minor league factory. oo "No one wants to be in this system. The players, the man- agers even the guy in the booth, all want some day to be in the Dome." Thomas is not impressed with major league players. He says that except for a special few- Robbie Alomar, Devon White and Todd Stottlemyre helped them-most act like "prima don- nas" who have had their "heads turned" by the money. The real people are in the minors, he says, honest kids who will give an honest answer to a question, with "no cliches, no policy." He believes more people would sup- port the system if they under- stood it. Not only is good ball af- fordable in the minors, "there is achance to get close to the kids." Chasing the Dream is more than an insight into an industry that few understand. It is a re- flection of a society that pays " a million times more for someone to hit a ball out of a park than it does to a teacher." And it is'a testimonial to the tenacity of the human spirit and to the youth who dare to dream the dream. In Community Park in Merritton, Thomas says, the St. Catharines "Baby Jays" can stand on the bleachers and look across the lake at the shimmer- ing white edifice of the Sky- Dome.
