David Talbot, a University of Ottawa student from Scugog, filed his nomination papers ear- lier this month as an indepen- dent candidate in the riding of Ottawa-Vanier. The 20-year-old Political Sci- ence major chose to run in the election "to show students and young people that they do have a future." David Talbot Mr. Talbot told the Port Perry Star last week that he was con- cerned about the future of the country's youth. He believes politicians cur- rently in power are not making decisions based on the future "but on the present. This, he said, is wrong. "The government is spending my generation's future away," he said. "Nobody is respecting the future when a decision is made." "There's a lack of vision for the future. Politicians think for next week, not the next genera- tion." Becoming a politician was never a dream of his, but this changed after serving as a page in the House of Commons last year. Mr. Talbot credits this ex- perience with opening his eyes to the inner workings of federal government. "[Gdidn't like what I saw. There's nobody representing my geheration's interests," he said. Also, during his tenure as a page, he "lost faith in the party system." Mr. Talbot said he ex- perienced too much party poli- tics in which parties voted against motions due to party lines. "Politicians aren't doing their jobs. I've seen them close up and some do a good job, but there are some real political hacks in there," he said. He chose to run as an inde- pendent candidate to represent the views of his constituents in- stead of towing party lines. "As an independent, what I can offer is to represent the views of my constituents," he said. "I will work damn hard for what I've promised. I don't like breaking promises." It has been an uphill battle to convince people to take him se- riously, however. "It took a lot of work to become respected because I'm young and independent," he said, add- ing that the legitimization pro- cess took some time. Despite this struggle, Mr. Talbot has a realistic outlook on the campaign. As he doesn't ex- pect to win the election (the in- cumbent Liberal candidate has held the seat for 21 years), he believes any votes he garners will prove that his campaign was successful. "It will be a victory to get somebody who traditionally votes Liberal or PC to listen to me," he said. "No matter how I do, it's a victory. I've learned and the people working with me have learned."
