A -------- A A -- I eS Fr Ne TI TN LI I re EO IL SAN pe he Hartndn Yoo wm sa '9 "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday October 5;1903- 11 Pesticide propaganda Letters to the editor To the Editor; I've finally been pushed to write my first letter to the edi- tor, in hopes of putting an end to this "Pesticide Propaganda." First of all a round of ap- plause to Mr. Yellowlees for his response to Modern Agriculture Addicted to Pesticides. His thoughts most certainly repre- sent all "Progressive - Agricul- turalists" (farmers still in busi- ness) and well informed consumers. Next on my agenda is to ad- dress the letter "More Research On Pesticide Use." These tidbits cannot be called research, they are a bunch of numbers and words taken out of context. Yes "Pesticide Propaganda." Please do not insult us with your American facts and fig- ures. It is well known that On- tario's pesticide laws are of the strictest in the world, and the food on your table is of the saf- est. I would however like to clear up a few misconceptions on the Canadian half of your letter. The statement about AVAD- EX BW and TREFLAN losing half to volitization, occurring within three days if not incorpo- rated is probably true. But the reader was not told that no busi- riessman (yes farmers are busi- ness people) in his right mind would let this happen! The half it: goes into the air doesn't kill weeds, 'and believe me when yon spend over $35,000 on chemicals per year like I do, you a gverything in your power to get the most out of each penny. On the labels of both of these products and in Publication 75 1993 Guide to Weed Control from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture & Food, the instruc- tions regarding incorporation after application are as follows: AVADEX BW: "In all treat- ments, the chemical should be worked into the soil within two hours after spraying. TRE- FLAN: the. first incorporation should be done as soon as possi- ble after application, but can be "delayed 8-24 hours. Nowhere in the instructions for either chemical does it mention three DAYS! The statement that "runoff concentrations of Atrazine and Metolachlor may exceed nation- al water quality standards for at least a month after annlica- tion," is pretty vague to be called research. It could also go under the "May Not Exceed" col- umn. I wish I knew the vintage of this statement, because I can tell you in the last couple of years the recommended rates of 'Atrazine have beer drastically reduced due to concerns regard- ing well water quality. Lo. Yes, No Till farming 18 1n- creasing and fast and the con- cept got rolling because farmers are concerned about the envi- ronment. The studies I have read shows that there is less chemical runoff and leaching from mature no till fields, than tilled soil. . War farmers are "Ste- wards of the Land" we make our living from the soil and hope our children have the same privi- lege. So we wouldn't do any- thing to harm the soil or poison the food chain, as this is our only market! Steven Grove, Blackstock, Ont. ARRIVED!
