PN ERR Pr yr 14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 19,1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Borelians to present "Harvey" next month It is with great pleasure that the Borelians Community Theatre Group bring next to their stage that all-time family favorite "Harvey." As unpretentious as its name sounds, this play embodies a sparkling quality which has en- abled it to endure for almost 50 years. To this day, itis frequent- ly produced on stage - and you can bet that if your local video store carries any of the classics, it will certainly have the film version starring James Stewart on its shelves!! "It is amazing how many peo- ple (over 35) remember this play," says director Betty Ann Manuel. "At the very least, they recall something about a large, invisible rabbit and that Jimmy ON OCTOBER 25, VOTE Alex Shepherd lid iberal Authorized by Ted Rytwinski, Official Agent for Alex Shepherd. YDITAR ITAL Stewart made the role of El- wood P. Dowd famous. Many of these people would have been children when they saw the play/movie, but something about it has stayed with them." When asked why she thought the popularity of 'Harvey' has endured over so many years, Ms. Manuel is at no loss for an explanation: "I believe this play is about magic; magic in every- day life; about our need to stop and take time to 'smell the ros- es' - to appreciate the magic around us. The busier and more complicated life gets, the more we are apt to be impressed with the message and the magic in 'Harvey. This is no pre-rehearsed an- swer: these are the words of a di- rector who sincerely loves this play and hopes to do justice to it in her own stage version. She is remaining true to its era by staging it in the '40s in which it TOWNSHIP OF SCUGOG PUBLIC NOTICE properties abutting on each side. Earl S. For example, the idea of 'Chumley's Rest,' a mental sanitorium for the well-to-do where much of the play takes place, is a spoof of what still used to be a reality in the '40s." Though she, as a director, is adding much of her own ingenu- ity to make this version of 'Har- vey' her own, she admits that most of what's funny comes from the actors, themselves, duringrehearsals. Bunty Webb who plays 'Veta Louise' and has performed the role on two previous occasions, admits it is a real give-and-take between the actors and direc- tor. "Because we have so thor- oughly studied 'Harvey' under Betty Ann's direction and taken so much time to talk about our roles before we even got up on stage, it has helped our charac- ters to develop and made for better performances. I'm still discovering new things about 'Veta Louise.' This is how the funny moments are created." Meanwhile, the production crew is busy at work huntin down period costumes an props, making lighting and sound decisions and pre- building parts of the set: all of which will contribute to the overall magic of this upcoming production. The cast and crew of 'Harvey' invite you to experience the fruit of their labors showing Nov. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 at Town Hall 1873.
