Kay, originally from West Virgina, majored in sculpting at West Virgina Uni- versity and was well known in the U.S. for her scrimshaw. Sue, a native of Canada, has been designing and making dolls for eight years and has a background in illustration and tailoring. Bartonberg Originals focus primarily on three types of "dolls." The oil cloth reproduc- tions are the only true doll form that they do, as the Father Christmases, Wizards and Sha- mans would be more accurately described as sculptures. With the inception of Bartonberg in the fall of 1992, Sue and Kay ~ concentrated on their Father Christma: line. Each head was needlesculpted and treated with multiple coats of gesso and sanding before being painted. The bodies were built on a wire armature and then costuming and accessorizing was done for each one individually. The Fa- ther Christmases are non- traditional with many favoring a "woodsy"" theme. The oil cloth reproduction dolls are all-cloth and treated with gesso, house paint and sev- eral coats of stain and varnish to give them a true "turn-of-the- century" flavor. New for 1993 are the Wiz- ards, Shamans and Earth Peo- ple. These one-of-a-kind charac- ters have heads and hands sculpted from ""Cernit." Their bodies are cloth covered wire ar- matures. Each figure is cos- tumed according to its personal- ity with the use of many exotic accessories, such as furs, bone, feathers, and old beads. These figures are born from the imagi- nations of their creators and lean toward the mythical in in- terpretation.
