And he wants to share this his- tory with the readers of the Port Perry Star. Mr. Arculus, a noted local his- torian, will begin a monthly col- umn in the Port Perry Star enti- tled "Historical Sketches of Scugog."" The articles will deal with all aspects of the history of the area including early communities in Scugog, the railway and heroes of Scugog. This will provide an in-depth look at the earliest maps of the Scugog region including John Stegmann's 1804 survey and the Samuel Wilmot survey from 1809-1810. He is the author of a number of papers and historical books including the history of Port Perry High School. He has also written numer- ous articles for the Port Perry Star including the paper's anni- versary supplement in 1991 and a three-part feature on Peter Perry in which he received an award from the Ontario Com- munity Newspaper Association. Mr. Arculus serves as presi- dent of the Lake Scugog Histori- cal Society and created two his- torical walking tours of Port Perry. It is his love for local history which brought him to Scugog in seeking a community to raise a family. "It didn't take long before we realized that this was an ideal community in which to raise a family and at the same time pursue my passion for local his- tory," he said.
