AORN 4 on A Rl ER ATT - "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Food canvasser not a By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Operation Scugog's Thanks- giving food drive fell short of ex- pectations, but officials are thankful for the food the bank did receive. ~The drive held on Thanksgiv- ing weekend collected less than the drive held at Easter. Al- though the amount of food brought to the local fire halls during the weekend was less than expected, a greater amount of food was received by the bank the week following the drive. During the drive the bank re- ceived food donations plus $40 from a local nursery school as well as cases of food donated by the Port Perry IGA. Several cash donations from local resi- dents were also received as well as the food donations. With 'more people using the bank then ever before the need for food increases. Last week, 27 people used the bank, which is higher than the normal num- ber. In August, 60 boxes of food were distributed and 71 were distributed in September. Ac- cording to Operation Scugog volunteer Kathy Gundry about one dozen of those were to sin- gle-person households. The increase during those months was attributed to stu- dents awaiting their Ontario Student Assistance Plan (OSAP) and others awaiting un- employment insurance cheques. Officials at the food bank want to remind local residents the'bank does not solicit door to door donations. Concern has been expressed by food bank of- ficials after reports reached them about someone collecting door to door, in a local subdivi- sion, for the food bank. This food was never received by the food bank. Officials want to stress that Operation Scugog does not per- form door to door canvassing for food. Those who wish to donate to the bank should drop their non- perishable gifts off at the drop boxes provided at the Port Perry IGA or Dowson's Valumart. Leaf pick-up Residents of Port Perry and Prince Albert can bag their leaves and take them to the curb as leaf pick up begins this week. Beginning tomorrow (Oct. 20) and for the three consecutive Wednesdays a special leaf col- lection will take place. October 20 and 27 and November 3 and 10 are the designated leaf pick up days in the two areas. All leaves for collection must be placed in clear, plastic bags and must be placed at curbside for the special collection. A bin has also been placed at the Durham Region's Transfer Station on 1623 Reach Street/ Regional Road 8 and 3590 Ed- gerton Road for residents out- side the pick up area, who wish to dispose of their leaves. Those residents must dump their leaves loosely or in clear, plastic bags.
