PENA Sermerntane, 1, am eet SN TE Wn ---- TL "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Recent restructuring at the Ministry of Natural Resources may be to blame for local confu- sion over inevitable fishing reg- oation changes on Lake Scu- Some local fishermen have re- ported discrepances from differ- ent MNR departments on the future of Lake Scugog ice fish- ing. According to MNR engineer Paul on Thy recent boundary changes within the MNR offices have probably caused the confu- sion. The MNR office in Lindsay is in control of the Lake Scugog fishery, while the Maple office, which formerly controlled this aspect, manages the land sur- rounding the lake. Any information which varies is probably due to these chang- es," Mr. Drysdale explained, adding they would be straight- ened out. Local fishermen told the Star they had been told by the Maple office that they were unaware of any ice fishing regulations be- - ing putin place. Again, Mr. Drysdale stated this confusion would also be cleared up. A meeting held in October of 1992 in Port Perry regarding the future of the winter sport re- sulted in several recommenda- tions being put forward on how to control the harvest. MNR officials announced in February, 1993 that shortening SPOOKY SIDEWALK SALE October 25 - 30 the ice fishing season, thus cutting out December and March, was their recommenda- tion. This regulation, though still awaiting its final signature, as ithad to be approved by the min- ster's office and the federal gov- ernment, is "fully expected" to be put into place say offi- cials. The approval is primarily a formality . David Bell, a biologist with the MNR said at the time of the recommendation that it was made this early (February) "be- cause the process of approval is solong. We made it now in antic- ipation of it being approved at the start of the 1993/94 season." Once the final approval is re- ceived the regulations will be formally finalized. And "we ful- ly expect those (regulations) to be in place for this winter sea- son," Mr. Drysdale told the Star. The awaiting of the final sig- nature is also the reason for the discrepancy in the 1993 Ontario Sport Fishing Regulation book. The regulations were not put in place before the book was pre- pared. The initial meeting was held in October 1992, but the MNR took several months to de- termine what changes it would recommend. "The book was out long before the regulations changed, so the changes could not be included in this book," Mr. Drysdale said. Once the finalization is com- plete, which Lois Deacon, MNR biologist, said in the next month, the MNR will be releas- FREE & FUN!
