"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" UCW groups to meet on November : te by Karen Davis "Scugog Island What a weekend! Yeah, Blue Jays!! I imagine we all will be able to get more rest this week. Port Perry Baptist Church 2210Hwy.7A The AWANA Boys and Girls Clubs enjoyed various activities last weekend. Some had a Fri- day night campfire and weiner roast and others went for hikes on Saturday. We had 187 boys and girls out last week (age three to Grade 6) and 39 leaders were present. For those who are not familiar with our clubs, the name AWANA stands for Ap- proved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, taken from 2 Timo- thy 2:15 - "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." Each week, the club- bers hear a Bible story, enjoy a games time in the gymnasium where the winning team gets AWANA shares, and a hand- book time where they recite and talk about the Bible verse they have learned and for which they can win awards to put on their uniforms. AWANA shares can be spent on toys and other fun items in the AWANA store which opens about every six weeks. If you want to see and hear more, why not pay us a vis- it. We meet Wednesday even- ings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is no admission fee, but each club- ber pays for the book and uni- form. Everyone is welcome. This energetic group con- sisted of Bonnie Bell, Bob Caw- ker, Doug "Barber, Edna Beckett, Doreen Adam and Joanne Yourkevich. Our Choir sang two beautiful anthems called "What a Lovely Name" and "With a Voice of Singing". The Men's Quartet sang "The Holy City". This talented quar- tet included Bill Corbett, Bruce Gerrow, John Brown and Wayne Wanamaker. Thank you all for sharing your special mu- sic with us. The sanctuary looked beauti- ful with fall flowers and decora- tions. Thanks, Joan Aldred and Madeline Cawker, for 'sharing your artistic talents! The children of the Sunday School sang "Happy Birthday" to our church before they went downstairs. The children made - a banner to decorate the base- ment for our lunch. The chil- dren are indeed part of our church family. Rev. Whitney's mother passed away so he was unable to be with us. Our sympathy goes out to the Whitney family. Our minister, Elaine Barber, stepped in and helped make our service memorable. Thanks, Elaine. Elaine spoke on the history of our church. Here are a few more dates of interest. The original building on our site was built in 1869. In 1943, the Grace United Church dedicated the cornerstone of our present building. The finished church was dedicated in 1947. This in- formation is helpful since the Sunday School children always want to know what birthday our church is celebrating!
