Whether it's to discuss cur- rent events, the weather, family or any other topic, they rarely miss a week. Mrs. Nickerson is one of a small group of local shut-ins who enjoy the company of a visi- tor on a regular basis from Scu- gog Community Care's Visiting Program. Every Wednesday the pair meet for approximately an hour and have formed a real friend- shipover the period. "Edith has been very faithful visiting me," Mr. Nickerson said. "I don't get many visitors." "Every Wednesday Edith comes unless something drastic happens." Although Mrs. Nickerson lives with her daughter and some of her grandchildren, she still enjoys the company of a woman whois closer to her age. "We usually have lots to say. That's understandable with two women," Mrs. Nickerson said. Mrs. Blair had been working Public interested in project From page 1 will be used to choose the most viable options. Ms. Cancilla noted that judg- ing from the size of the crowds at the sessions in the various communities including one in Uxbridge on October 21, people areinterested. "Judging by the size of the crowd, people are concerned about the project," she said. According to Ms. Cancilla, the preferred site will be chosen by the fall of 1994. An environmen- tal assessment will then be sub- mitted and public hearings will begin in 1996. Following a year of public hearings, the construction is scheduled to begin in mid-1997 for a start-up date of 2002. She said she chose to volun- teer her time to the organiza- tion as a way to stay active. Mrs. Blair said the companionship she brings to others is recipri- cated as well. "It helps me too. I can'tjust sit in the house and do nothing. It keeps me busy," she said. The friendly visit program was implemented in the com- munity to alleviate the loneli- ness of the clients, said Dorothy Imperial, Community Care's Administrator. And it has grown over the years. There are now four volun- teers visiting approximately 12 people amonth. In fact, it is growing in such a way that Mrs. Imperial has found it necessary to appoint a volunteer co-ordinator to look - after the visitation schedule. Mrs. Imperial believes that a program such as the Visiting Program will become more needed in the community in the future due to the provincial gov- ernment's plan to expand long- term care. "I can really see it as one of the things that will expand," she said.
