2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 2,1993 Council cool to groups request for bylaw to regulate method of displaying adult materials By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A local greup's request for tougher codes on adult material received cool response from Scu- gog councillors. Representing both the Cana- dians for Decency and People Against Pornography, Mary Jo- hansen appeared before Scugog council on Monday seeking a by- law regulating the manner in which adult materials are dis- played. The groups which she repre- sents would like to see all mate- rials on the sensitive subject regulated under a bylaw passed recently in other Durham Re- gion municipalities. Mrs. Johansen used a recent- ly passed bylaw from Whitby as an example. Under this bylaw, adult mag- azines must be displayed at a height of 1.5 metres or greater and placed behind an opaque barrier. - The same rules apply for the rental or sale of adult movies and a further provision calls for the inclusion of a physical barri- er cordoning off the display area. The Whitby bylaw calls for fines of up to $5,000 if contra- vened. Mrs. Johansen was seeking the bylaw "to help make our community safer and healthi- er." She argued that society is af- fected by the material and has a detrimental effect on the com- munity. But council gave a cool recep- tion to the request, opting not to make any motion on the subject. Area Councillor Harvey Gra- ham told the Port Perry Star af- ter the delegation that he was convinced that the area mer- chants comply with the inten- tion of the bylaw. "I'm convinced that we don't see flagrant problems," he said. But he added he saw no prob- lem passing a bylaw to deal with | Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
