Although many Canadians are too young to have experi- enced or witnessed the horror of war and the terrible devasta- tion it can bring about, all Cana- dians owe a debt to those that served and to those comrades that gave the supreme sacrifice. Even today we have thousands of our fellow countrymen and women serving on peace keep- ing duty around the world. Remembrance is forever em- bedded in our consciousness and serves as a focus for Cana- - dians as we strive to preserve, protect and promote the right and freedoms we take for grant- ed today. As a member of the Royal Ca- nadian . Legion," Remembrance Day gives myself and my fellow Legionaires a quiet moment of recollection of our fallen com- rades and of our fellow veterans whom have since passed on. Please be generous to your lo- cal poppy campaign. It is the only time the Royal 'Canadian Legion requests support from the general public. Every cent of these funds is used to help vete- rans, their families, bursaries for needy stadents, hospitals and many more worthwhile causes. + From our own general fund and the poppy trust fund - . Branch 419 Port Perry has giv- en well over $35,000 locally since January of 1992, with an- other $156,000 to be given to our local hospital within the next few weeks. We need your sup- port to our poppy campaign to help us continue to help others. Lest We Forget By Gord Mills This coming weekend we will - once again celebrate Armistice Day in our towns and villages across Ontario. It's a time to remember, to look back at times past, some- times with a happy smile and at other times with a great deal of sadness. As we remember and honor those' who gave their all, we can also remember war time experiences that are forever etched in our memories. I remember the war time sau- sages which my mother claimed were made of sawdust mixed with herbs which allowed us to. eat them. I remember the news- paper seller who pitched his tent outside of a pub with his board proclaiming, "Chin up, don't look so solemn, nuffins ap- pened yet, why worry about to- morrow, taint ere yet." A mes- sage to dispel the gloom of the threatened invasion. I can re- member my hair standing on end as I listened to Churchill give his "We will never surren- der" speech after Dunkirk and running down to the beach at Brighton with the biggest stick I could find as I gazed across the English Channel toward France and the enemy that had not yet arrived - and for the grace of God never arrived. This weekend many stories will be exchanged in the local le- gion hall, the sadness felt as we remember will also be inter- mixed with laughter as many an incident from times past is recalled. ~~ Time of course has taken its toll of the veterans we gather to honor. But we gather to honor - them in a special way because they are our friends, family and neighbors. oo 'e pause on this day, amid the challenges we face in this changing world as legislators, to honor the veterans who pds | being here for us possible. We honor those who served int campaigns of the North Atlan- tic, North West. Europe, Italy, North Africa and the Pacific. - We honor those who gave thé . lives at.Dieppe and in the fense of Hong Kong, in the Bat- tle of Britain, the Battle of Orto- na and the Normandy invasion, Lest we forget, let us a ber and honor all those who gave their lives for peace in the Great Warof1914-18. "On this day we also honor all who gave their lives in peace keeping actions around the world, from Korea to Somalia. The wars have taken a terri- ble toll, thousands lost their life fighting for our freedom. That freedom is brought home to all of us here on this day in a mean- ingful way. We come here to de- bate the issues affecting our peers free of fear, free of repri- sals, and free to say what we want. This freedom we share is because of those who gave their all to defend it.
