"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 9, 1993 - 37 On Saturday, Nov. 6, the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee "B" hockey club once again played host to another Oshawa Peewee team from the Elite Little NHL. This time it was the Canadiens turn to come to Port Perry to take on the Doorsmen. Last Sat- urday, Oct. 30, the Little NHL Blackhawks were sent packing by a score of 8-2. As expected, it didn't take these two fine teams long to get right at it. Port came out play- ing their usual aggressive style. Both goalies were tested early, only to send the other team away shaking their heads in disbelief. Oshawa had the edge in the play in the opening peri- od, but the Port Perry defence was doing a good job around their own net. Brad Johnston, Deryk Campbell and Adam Brain were giving the Canadi- ens fits with their tenacious forechecking. Once again, Adam Hobbs was handing out some heavy checks along the boards and making the Oshawa goalie awful nervous with his wicked slapshot. Port Perry lit up the scoreboard first at the 7:53 mark when they had Oshawa hemmed in their own zone and Jeff Neal made a nice pass to Brad Johnston at the right of the Oshawa net. In the slot to Deryk Campbell, who slammed it through heavy traf- fic past the busy Oshawa goalie to take the early lead 1-0. The Oshawa goalie had to be good to keep David Gainey off the scoresheet as he let two nice shots go from close range, only to be turned away empty- handed. Jeff Neal and Ryan McQuade did a nice job in kill- ing all three of Port Perry's pen- alties in the first period. There wasn't any more scoring in the opening period as the horn sounded with Port out in front 1-0. Oshawa wasn't about to go home yet as they took the play right to Port Perry. Oshawa was firing a lot of rubber to- wards the Port Perry net but it wasn't making much of an im- pression on this fine Port Perry team. Finally, Oshawa tied the game when they jammed one past the sprawling Port Perry goaltender. With the score tied 1-1, The New Kid on the Block, Jeff Neal came flying out of the Port Perry zone, over to Ryan McQuade, off the boards to Jus- tin (Cat) Sheehey who put a soft pass over to Travis Pickard at the side of the Oshawa net, in front to Scott Sanderson and "He Scores!" to give Port the lead 2-1. Oshawa came right back try- ing to get the equalizer but the stubborn Port Perry team dug in and wouldn't let it happen even though they were getting outshot. As the period was winding down, both teams were playing nice hockey. With Oshawa on the power play, they got one back with only seven ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 2-2. The third period got under- way with Port Perry doing some nice forechecking causing Oshawa to make some untime- ly turnovers, giving Port some pretty nice scoring chances. Justin Sheehey handed out a couple of stiff checks, along with Adam Hobbs, causing Oshawa to shy away from their game plan from time to time. Oshawa wasn't about to load up the bus and go home yet as they kept on coming, trying to take the lead. At 12:14, Deryk Campbell fired the puck off the boards to Adam Brain who put a nice pass onto Adam Hobbs' stick as he split the Oshawa de- fence and was in all alone on the Oshawa goalie, only to be denied again. At 10:16 Chris Jones lugged the puck out of the Port Perry zone and hit Scott Sanderson at centre ice with a perfect pass. Scott did some nice stick handling, went around three Oshawa players and tucked it neatly behind the surprised Oshawa goaltender ModJacks From Page 33 Larocque, who began the sea- son as part of a tandem with Rick Hutchinson, will be the number one goalie for the next four to six weeks as Hutchinson recovers from surgery to re- move his appendix. Also, James Patterson has been called up from the Port Perry Midget squad to lighten the load a little for Larocque. Pogue's marker kept Bobcay- geon in the lead until 19:08 of the first period when Port Perry evened the score at one on the powerplay. Some excellent puck move- ment in the Bullets zone result- ed in Jason Cochrane's first of three goals on the night. Steve Laird's low shot from the point was redirected by Cochrane, beating Bullets' Chad Van Dam, who up until that point had stoned the ModJacks on sev- eral opportunities. That first goal seemed to spark the MoJacks who struck again before the first period ended. Todd Dennis converted a feed from Keith Leslie with only two seconds on the clock to give Port Perry a 2-1 lead at the to give Port a 3-2 lead. Oshawa kept coming and coming but Port Perry was really starting to get it together with every- body playing as a team to keep turning Oshawa away with their pockets empty. Aaron Chambers and Adam Moynes did a nice job on de- fence with Blayne Kinnunen and Brad Johnston with 3:46 showing on the clock and Port ahead 3-2. With two minutes left in the third period, Jeff Neal made a nice poke check to break up a nice Oshawa rush. The whole team did a nice job in the dying seconds of the game to hold on to the one-goal lead as the horn sounded to end the game with, Port Perry defeating Oshawa by the score of 3-2. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. Honorable Overhead Door Peewees undefeated mention for good hustle goes to Blayne Kinnunen. Ryan McQuade and Jeff Neal get the nod for good defensive effort. This was Adam Hobbs' last game with the Scugog Over- head Doors team as he "earned" the right to be called up to the Peewee "A" Legionaires. Adam 18 going to be missed, but the Doorsmen wish him all the best of luck with the Legionaires. win four straight last week break. The ModJacks came out for the second period playing the kind of physical hockey that may have been lacking from last sea- son, taking every opportunity to finish their checks and pound Bobcaygeon into submission. Though Dennis' goal proved to be the winner, the MoJacks continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone. At 2:22 of the second period Shannon Todd found Laird who had been left Jason Cochrane all along at the side of the Bul- lets net. Laird's first shot was stopped by Van Dam who watched helplessly as the Port Perry winger lifted the rebound New Holland grinder-mixers work hard every day optimizing feed gains. Aside from toughness, the 1993 Modacks have also im- proved greatly on their special teams play, an aspect of the game that Menzies knows weighs heavily on the success or failure of a team at this level. "It plays a big part in this league because usually the team that has the best special teams is going to come out on top," said Menzies. With this in mind, Menzies has worked with his players and come up with some very sol- id powerplay and penalty kill- ing combinations. The ModJacks were very effec- tive killing penalties Sunday, applying tenacious forecheck- ing and smart play in the neu- tral zone that resulted in a shorthanded goal at the 12:02 mark of the second period. After a turnover by Bobcay- geon in the ModJacks end, de- fenseman Kevin Vivian thread- ed a breakaway pass to Cochrane who had slipped be- hind the Bullets' defense. Co- chrane, who ranks among Port Perry's quickest forwards, beat Van Dam high to the glove side for his second goal of the game and a4-1 ModJack lead. Cochrane completed his hat trick at 12:05 of the final period, again on the powerplay, when he beat Van Dam from the slot after a pass from captain Clair Cornish who had three assists on the night. The win moves Port Perry's record to 5-1-2, good enough for second place overall one point behind the Uxbridge Bruins.
