TT I NS pres = "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Man cries foul after swan shot near Caesarea home By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Bill Carrick is in a foul mood after someone shot and killed one of his trumpeter swans on Thursday afternoon. The Toronto resident has a flock of 36 trumpeter swans which he boards at his friend's residence in Caesarea. Most of the swans are left un- caged and Mr. Carrick believes the swan may have been shot by hunters at a nearby pond. After being shot, the swan headed towards its home base at Charlie Buller's residence. But before it could reach its des- tination, the swan plummetted from the sky and dropped on Highway 67 in front of the Bull- ers' home. A passing motorist saw the swan fall from the sky and brought it to the Bullers' at- tention. Mr. Carrick told the Port Perry Star that this was the sec- ond known shooting of a trum- peter swan in the past two weeks. A female swan shot near the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is expected to recover after be- ing clipped in the wing by hunt- ersin late October. Although the trumpeter swan is not listed as an endangered species, Mr. Carrick said it is considered threatened. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. Although there are more than 17,000 trumpeter swans in the western portion of North Ameri- ca, officials are trying to reintro- duce the species in two provinc- es and five states in the east. Mr. Carrick has boarded swans at the Bullers' lakeside home for the past four years. Most of his present flock were hatched this year from 50 eggs which were shipped from Alas- ka at a cost of $200 an egg. Scott Paper, makers of White Swan tissue, , helped cover the $10,000 i As well as trying to re- establish the species in the area, Mr. Carrick is also work- ing on a migration project with the birds. Although the swans are har- dy enough to survive the Cana- dian winter, Mr. Carrick said he "wants to try to fly some of them south to reorganize their migra- tion flight patterns." The project involves imprint- ing the swans so they will follow him. If the project sounds some- what familiar, it's because it's Turnto Page 20 story for details.
