Canada's contribution to the two Great Wars is often overlooked. Little if anything is taught in our schools about Canada's great- est contribution in Canadian history. The Oshawa area played a major role. General Motors made military vehicles and the famous Mosquito bomber. The elementary flying training school at the Oshawa airport trained about 500 airmen at a time and was awarded with the coveted best air-training base in Canada award. Airmen were trained from Australia, New Zealand, United States and England's R.A.F. under the Commonwealth Training plan. With little more than a popu- lation of 10 million Canada con- tributed more than a million servicemen to the war effort. Women did their share in the forces and war work. When the war started in 1939 the full strength of the RCAF was only 4,000 men. More than 132,000 young men from the Commonwealth EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. A history of Canada's brave air- men can be seen at the Robert Stuart Aeronautical Museum at the Airport. Among the war- time trainees was the famous actor Richard Burton. The Duke of Kent, youngest brother of King George officially opened the #20 EFTS in 1942. e was later killed in a plane crash in Scotland. No. 20 EFTS was turning out 60 pilots every six weeks by 1942, In January 1942 Canada do- nated $1 billion to the British war effort -- a huge sum at the time. Dieppe and Normandy are names familiar to Canadians. The 50th anniversary of the D- Day invasion are being cele- brated by hundreds of veterans by a return trip next June to Normandy aboard the liner QE 11. More than 400 have already signed up from all over south- ern and central Ontario plus a number from New York State. The Tour is being arranged by Lt.-Col. Norm Wilton and Ray Lunn of Intra Travel, Oshawa. Col. Wilton is a D-Day para- trooper veteran and a life time Oshawa resident. He has been active in the es- tablishment of the Military Mu- seum at the airport as a tribute to our servicemen and the con- tribution of General Motors and other Oshawa firms toward the war effort. Robson leather of Oshawa manufactured 67 per cent of all the boots for the Ca- nadian forces. Phillips glass (later Dy plate) and Scholfield Woolen Mills also played a ma- jorrolein the war effort. Camp X spy training school layed a major role. "Intrepid" - Sir Wm. Stephenson. The CBC series the "Valour and the Hor- ror" has angered veterans from all three services. Former War Correspondent Charles Lynch said "The producers gave such a negative spin to Canada's war effort that it seemed we should have stayed home." Lynch said of the Normany installment, "I filled 12 pages of notes I regard as inaccuracies and misrepre- sentations." Ray Silver a vete- ran journalist whose Bomber Command aircraft was shot down over Germany in 1942 said "What I found was an en- tire misconception of what the war was all about. I found the characterizations appalling. They presented the RAF offi- cers and Bomber Command Chief Harris as idiots." Even CBC director, professor John Crispo called it a disgrace and a travesty. Outraged vets want every video and book of the Val- our and The Horror be recalled and have launched a $500 mil- lion lawsuit. If they win, $1 dol- lar will be given to each veteran and the rest donated to chari- ties including Red Cross and Air Cadets. Veteran Broadcast- er Joel Aldred D.F.C. who lives on Scugog Island was outraged at the way the RCAF was de- picted. He launched a com- plaint with CBC and the gov- ernment. On Nov. 11 lets remember the valour of our servicemen who made the supreme sacrifice and celebrate with those who sur- vived the horror. Sincerely, Dean J.
