"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 16,1993 - 9 Speaker reflects on Somalia EE AB WIA BIG teNrev ae AS his time By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star In less than a year, Paul Dot- zert saw a country change be- fore his eyes. When he arrived in Somalia in December, 1992, the country was in the grips of a famine. The town of Baidoa, in which he would spend the next nine months, was experiencing a mortality rate of 18 per cent. But by the time he left in Sep- tember the rate had dropped to zero. The reason for this sudden drop in nine months time was due to the work of Mr. Dotzert and two co-workers from World Vision. The contingent arrived in the war-torn country to combat the famine destroying the country. This was no easy task, howev- er. The people had given up all hope of farming the barren wasteland in which they lived. But drought was not the only problem. The country was also torn apartby acivil war. "The sight that greeted my eyes was starvation," he said of his arrival in Baidoa. "Not only was thére starvation and death, there was also destruction." Knowing the task was going to be difficult, the group set about the job of turning the vil- lage of 70,000 people around. The first job at hand was to counteract the starvation. They began mixing a formula with milk and along with biscuits fed the children. Marines moved into the area to distribute food as well. Three cargo planes flew into the area daily to ensure enough food was - distributed. Each person was Paul Dotzert (right), who recently returned from Somalia, was the guest speaker at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church last week where he spoke on his experiences with World Vision. He is joined by Nancy Cruikshank, co-ordinator of reflection and prayer, and Glen Langford, area manager for Wolrd Vision. given a bag of food. "All the food was distributed," he said. "It was exciting to see." With the first goal of feeding the people accomplished, the second phase of the plan was to ensure the people were self- sufficient. In consultation with the town's elders, it was deter- mined that farming implements were needed to work the land. Local blacksmiths were con- tracted to make these tools. A package was then distribut- ed to each family consisting of five different seeds and various tools to enable the community begin farming. He said the community shquld be self-sufficient now. "The amount of effort and the amount of return is phenome- nal," Mr. Dotzert said noting the incredible turn around oc- curred in less than nine months. "It was rewarding to be in- volved In this," he told a wom- en's group at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church last week.
