"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Building permits drop Despite a slow month for building permits, Scugog con- tinues to post impressive num- bers. Permits for the year to date have totalled more than $14 million, doubling last year's amount for the same period. But Scugog's monthly build- Ing permit values decreased in October for the first time in a number of months, however. The number and value of per- mits dropped to 19 with a value of $604,380. This is down from the number issued in 1992 when 29 were sold at a value of $709,300. The most noticeable drop last month was for additions and al- terations in the commercial sec- tor where only one permit, val- ued at $12,000 was issued. This is down significantly from the same period a year ear- lier when four were issued at a value of $266,000. A dramatic drop was also seen in additions and altera- tions to single family dwellings. Only eight permits were issued last month with a value of $97,820. This is down from Oc- tober 1992's figure of 12 permits ata value of $143,800. Garage and carport construc- tion was also down as only two were issued at a value of $1,200. For the same period a year earli- er, seven were issued at a value of $77,500. Despite the decline in permits and values last month, some ar- eas remained steady. Single family dwellings main- tained a strong showing with three new dwellings coming on stream at a value of $419,360. This is up considerably in value from the same month last year in which three permits were is- sued at a value of $207,000. Industrial and agricultural buildings also remained im- pressive as two permits were purchased last month at a value of $56,000, up from $15,000 for one permit issued during the same month in 1992. A rise was also seen in addi- tions and alterations in thig sec- tor as 76 permits were issued with a value of $1,535,627. This 18 up from the 70 permits at $1,258,384 for the same period last year. The commercial sector has also been impressive this year as four permits, with a value of $740,000, were issued. There were no permits issued last year in this sector. The $5.2-million addition to the Community Memorial Hos- pital in Port Perry has helped boost the numbers in the insti- tutional and government build- ing sector. Six permits have been issued in this sector at a value of $5,213,000. This is up substan- tially from the two permits at a value of $8,000 for the same pe- riod last year. Although there were some im- pressive numbers, other seg- ments of the market have slipped. Both the value and number of permits in the industrial and agricultural sector have de- clined. Thirteen permits have been issued to date at a value of $584,078, down from 15 permits ata value of $762,000 last year. Additions and alterations in this sector were also down as only three have been purchased at a value of $118,040.
