"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 16,1993 - 17 Donating to the Salvation Army Family night Dec. 12 Florence Ashton Last Sunday was Missionary Sunday at Burns Church. It was nice to see a good number out. The choir sang a lovely an- them "Living for Jesus." Rev. Sheina Smith shared with us her experiences while service in the Indian Reserve in Manito- ba. She was chaplain to the women's jail for seven years, as well as working with children. Assisting with the service were W.M.S. members Ruth Oliver, Lois Daw and Florence Ashton. The Ladies' Bible Class met at the home of Sheila Parrott last Monday evening. The meet- ing opened with the singing of "1 Am Thine, O Lord." Aldine Wick read Psalm 80, vs. 8-13 and led in prayer. Meditation by the president was titled "Of Roots and Fruits." The hymn "More About Jesus" was sung. The poem "The Old Violin," was read by the president. Visiting report was given by Grace Hop- kins. There were several items of business dealt with, prior to the Christmas season. It was decided that we would make a contribution of money to be giv- en to the Salvation Army to as- sist a needy family at Christ- mas time. The W.M.S. members have expressed their wish to assist in this project. Lexie Pettus was in charge of the program. She gave us a nice talk on "Saints," and closed the meeting with prayer. Refreshments were served by the hostess and a happy! time enjoyed by all. For December we Join together with the W.M.S. members, spouses and friends for adinner party. Visiting with Bernice and Jean Gardner recently were Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Ingleton and Douglas of Peterborough. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim Lynde and his family as Jim is a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. Results of the euchre party are as follows: nine tables were played. Men's first prize went to Bill Robinson, second to Joan Fleming. Ladies first Gert Ta- ber, second Verna Slute and Dorothy Bray. Lone hands Art Richardson. The Kivell Family from Chat- ham, presented a very inspiring evening of gospel music on Sun- day evening. Some comments were that it was one of the best concerts held in Ashburn. Gary Kivell received a standing ova- tion as he sang his final selec- tion, "I Bowed On My Knees and Cried Holy." Gary has one of the finest voices in gospel mu- sic to day.
