PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 16,1993 - 31 sirens qd K Weekend sweep Malmont Atom As win three straight On Nov. 14, Port Perry's Lake shore League Atom A team completed a weekend sweep of their games by rebounding from a two goal deficit to win by a 4-2 score over the Oshawa Canadi- ans. Earlier in the weekend, they won an exhibition game by an identical 4-2 score against Bowmanville. The first game was a tight 2-1 win over league opponents, Trenton. In Oshawa, goalie Chris Mon- sma was under siege early in the game but despite many ter- rific saves, the Canadians scored twice; once on a goal mouth scramble and then on a 3-on-2 break only 13 seconds later. It seemed to take a bit of penalty-killing to get the Mal- mont engines fired up and they replied with two goals to end the first period at 2-2. : Billy Carr got the first Port goal from the slot after a nice feed from Matt MacMaster be- hind the net and an assist by Dean:Van Camp. The second was an end-to-end effort by de- fenceman Matt Cracknell with Dane Gray assisting. Defen- sively Joel Thomson was block- ing breakouts at the offensive blueline well, while Scott Brownson and Chris Skerratt did some great penalty-killing on our only penalty of the game. In the second period, the Mal- monts poured on the pressure and big Adam Moynes just missed on a setup from slick Ja- son Whitworth. Then Dane Gray and Chris Skerratt missed on a 2-0 breakaway. Continued pressure resulted in a duplicate of the first period when Billy Carr again was set up by Matt MacMaster, behind the net this time, with Grant Hooker helping. Sean Jeffrey was stickhandling well in his own zone to organize quick 'head-man' passes. Highlights of the third period included a great diving takeout by Dean Van Camp to foil a breakaway. Veteran David Jus- tynski showed some offensive skills in stealing the puck at the Oshawa blue line, deking a de- fenceman and unleashing a "cannonading" wrist shot. Ste- ven Wygerde back checked well to break up a dangerous play and "Bart" Monsma made yet Four schools took part in a fun volleyball tournament at S.A. Cawker on Nov. 11. Students from S.A. Cawker, R.H. Cornish, Cartwright Central and Uxbridge took part in the mini-tournament which stressed learning the fundamentals of the sport. another hot save on a point blank Oshawa chance. Our in- surance goal was by Jason Whitworth from Adam Moynes and David JustynskKi. At the Darlington arena on Nov. 13, the Bowmanville boys also jumped out to a quick start and peppered our net with hard shots early on. As often hap- pens however, after holding oft a pressuring Bowmanville at- tack, the play suddenly went up ice and Scott Brownson was on the doorstep of their goal to tip in a shot from Dane Gray and Sean Jeffrey. Lady Luck was on our side later as Dean Van Camp found himself at the side of the slot with the puck on his stick. He pumped it along the ice for a 2-0 Malmont lead. As- sists were earned by Billy Car and David Justynski. Other Port goals were by Matt Mac- Master and Jason Whitworth. Pat Derrane was called up for this match and played extreme- ly well in goal in relief of Chris Monsma. He stopped a breaka- way on the first chance coming his way and was sharp on sev- eral other hard shots. Nice first game, Pat! Tim Jones and Grant Hooker played well on the blueline and in tying up Bowmanville players to pre- vent rebound shots. The whole - team is congratulated on the win over this squad who are "AA" team and in the process making sure that Mr. Van Camp didn't have to flush his Tucky' hat. At home on Nov. 12, we faced Trenton in a rematch. The visi- tors were out to avenge a Mal- mont win one week earlier and they made our boys work very hard for the win in this squeak- er. Chris Skerratt got the first goal for Port in a short-handed effort. Joel Thomson jumped into the offensive zone after picking the puck out of a Tren- ton pocket and scored on a re- bound to get the winner. Dane Gray assisted on this goal. Chris Monsma played the whole game between the pipes in this one. Overall, our team's goals against average was helped even more by allowing five goals in their three games and our defencemen are commend- ed for helping protect out goal- ies so well. The work ethic of our forwards in their strong backchecking is also noted by the fans and parents. Good Luck in your Port Hope Tournament next weekend and your home game against Peter- borough on Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. With an effort like we've seen recently, perhaps we'll repay Peterborough for our loss to them in the Alliston tourna- ment. Peewee Legionaires win 4-3 on the road On Sunday morning Nov. 7, several of the Port Perry Pee- wee Legionaires marched in the Remembrance Day parade rep- resenting the team. On Sunday night the team travelled to Port Hope for the first game of a home and home series with the Panthers. The Legion squad took the lead at 13:34 mark of the first period, Danny Lyons scoring with Adam Hobbs assisting. In the second period the Le- gionaires went up by two more. Ian Parliament poked the puck past the netminder assisted by Glenn McCready and Danny Lyons. The fans were yelling for the boys to get the brooms out to sweep the shot as it was going over the goal line. Seth Gray and Adam Jones teamed up for a short-handed 'goal as Seth fired a hard wrist shot over the shoulder of the Port Hope goal- ie. The third period belonged to Port Hope as they outscored the Legionaires 3-1 but Port held on for a4-3 road win. Port's final goal was a great give and go play with Troy Campbell and Casey vanSchag- en feeding Adam Jones in the slot for a one-timer that the goalie had no chance on. Port's league record now stands at three wins, one loss and two ties. On Nov. 5 the Legionaires hosted the Oshawa LNHL Red Wings in an exhibition game. Port jumped into an early lead and were up 3-1 at the end of the first period. Troy Campbell car- ried the puck deep into Red Wing territory and fed a nice pass to Danny Lyons who was in a horizontal position when he directed the puck into the net. Port's second goal came from a nice clearing pass out of the Port zone to Derek Tindall who completed the play with an end to end rush. Port went up by three on a goal mouth scramble with Jon Froats scoring, assist- ed by Derek and Adam Jones. In the second period Port took a rash of penalties and with in- consistent play, found them- selves down 6-3, Oshawa scor- ing six unanswered goals: After a flood and a regroup by the Le- gion squad and a penalty free period, Port came back to earn a hard fought 7-7 tie. Danny scored his second of the game from a great centering pass from Adam Hobbs. Adam Jones then slipped one by the Oshawa goaltender assisted by Adam Hobbs. The two Adams again teamed up for some nifty pass- ing and Adam Hobbs let a slap- shot go beating the Oshawa goalie low on the glove side be- fore he was able to move on the shot. Troy Campbell did some ex- cellent work in the corner and behind the net to feed Casey vanSchagen deep in the slot for the tying goal. When the boys decide to stick to hockey and play a sound team game, with their strong skating and check- ing ability they are very capable to knocking off some good oppo- nents. Juveniles win lopsided match By Paul Wylie The last time Port and Lind- say played, Lindsay handed Port a devastating defeat, 5-0. On Thursday, Nov. 11 the Key- Bar Juveniles 'remembered' that and had a score to settle. Halfway through the second pe- riod Lindsay opened the scor- ing. Port answered back twice before the period was out. De- sautels passed to Ridgway who was set up behind the net. He made a heads-up pass to John Ennis who was open in front of the net. He quickly scored his first as a Juvenile and put Port on the board. The second goal was scored and assisted by the same line- mates. A few of them remember working on this in practice. Lindsay tied the score in the third, just before Port pulled ahead again. Port's final goal was on the power play. Vander Slagt set up Ennis, who rifled one from the point. While screening the goalie, Lindsay Parry used his body to deflect the puck past the confused goal- ie. Unfortunately, with only 36 seconds left in the third, Port was caught without their check- ing line out on the ice and Lind- say walked down the ice and tied the game up with only eight seconds left. The score 3-3, was a disap- pointment considering the team played an excellent defen- sive game. The whole team hus- tled and forechecked. Special mention goes to Matt Willetts who was superb between the pipes, especially in the first when Lindsay was dominating. Sunday saw the Juveniles travel to Bowmanville for an an- ticipated easy match as Port won the previous lopsided match 12-2. This game howev- er, would see Bowmanville with its entire team. It still didn't matter to the overpowering team from Port Perry. They went home with Mike Tripp just narrowly missing a shutout, winning 6-1. Port's first goal came on the powerplay. John Ennis deflect- ed the shot from Vanderligt and Card. McEnaney scored the next one by sliding the puck in, just out of reach of the goalie, along the ice. Desautels and Ridgway picked up assists. Af- ter getting the puck from De- sautels and stepping around from behind the net, Ridgway Just missed the open hole. Ennis was there and stuffed itin. For the most beautiful goal of the night, and for John Ennis' hat trick, Vanderligt and Card did some nifty tic-tac-toe pass- ing before setting up Ennis who made no mistake. The fifth goal was pretty weak, but Vanderligt wasn't ar- guing, and neither was Card and Ennis who set him up. To finish the onslaught, Vander- ligt and Vander Slagt made sharp passes to feed Sean McE- naney who broke through the defence and threaded the top corner. ccna ea le ae Rai i a A a i, RAN.
