PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 16, 1993 - 35 MoJacks win Scugog Overhead Doors ohe of two over weekend By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star It wasn't pretty, but the Port Perry MoJacks came away with a win on Sunday in a chippy af- fair with Little Britain. The 4-2 win gave the Port Perry team a split in its week- end games after a 5-4 loss in its road game in Uxbridge Friday night. "They (the ModJdacks) know how to win when they've got the lead," said coach Brad Menzies after the game Sunday night. - And, it appears this was the casein both games. Unlike the game on Friday night in which they were down 3-0 in the middle period before registering a goal, the MoJacks came out fast on Sunday to take the lead. The ModJacks took advantage of a power play, converting it into a goal after Clair Cornish took a pass from Shannon Todd up the ice for a goal at the 2:37 mark of the first. Clair Cornish This goal was the difference in the first period, standing as the only marker. The home team was forced to go into a defensive shell late in the period after taking two pen- alties in the span of seven sec- onds. Jeremy Ross was dealt an el- bowing penalty, but the real blow came when Gavin Co- chrane was assessed a match penalty for checking from be- hind. This resulted in a five- . minute penalty. Cochrane will be out for four games as a result of this penal- ty. This call had Menzies shak- ing his head after the game, not- ing that a similar hit by a Lit.ie Britain player resulted in only a two minute penalty, and a game misconduct. Although the team managed to kill off the first penalty, Little Britain got on the board at the 2:25 mark of the second when Mike Shaw tipped in a pass on the short side. The ModJacks took the lead once again at the 15:35 mark when Jason Cochrane's tip-in dribbled past the goaltender. Cornish and Todd Dennis as- sisted on the power play goal. The Merchants fought back again with a short-handed goal at 16:35 of the middle period when Dan Wardlaw stole the puck at the ModJacks' blueline and went in on a breakaway for an unassisted goal. This goal, at 11:33, was unassisted. Keith Leslie put the game out of reach at the 19:32 mark when ; Ai 1 Brad Menzies he carned a Dennis pass up the ice to beat the Merchants' goal- ie. . The third period turned into a chippy affair with 16 penalties assessed to the two teams, in- cluding fighting majors with 13 seconds left in the game. Menzies was pleased with his team's performance Sunday night but noted a number of missed opportunities which could have been converted into goals. "We had some good chances that we didn'tbury,"" he said. Unlike Sunday's game, Men- zles was not pleased with the team's Friday loss in Uxbridge, terming it the "worst game of the season." The team was down 3-0 in the second period before they got on the board with a goal by Keith Leslie. "The team came together in the third period scoring three unanswered goals, two by Cor- nish and one by Ian Titterton, to make the game close at 5-4. Holo Modacks Facts: The ModJacks host a two-game home stance this weekend when they play host to Bowmanville and Lake- field. Saturday is Minor Hockey Night and Sunday the Port Perry Ringette Association will be the guests of the ModJacks. Both games will feature activi- ties between periods. Both games begin at 8 p.m. Jgp home improvement lose 7-2 on home ice On Saturday, Nov. 13, the Scugog Overhead Doors hockey club played host to the Lindsay Peewee "B"s. Lindsay came out fast, taking the play right to Port Perry. The Doorsmen were off to their usual first period slow start, but Lindsay was playing "pass the puck" very well. Lindsay got on the scoresheet first at 7:10 to take the early lead 1-0. One of the few bright spots for Port Perry in the first period was Blayne Kinnunen and Brad Johnston as they tried to take up the slack by fore- checking and making some nice hits, trying to keep their team in the game. With the first peri- od winding down, Lindsay had Port hemmed in their own zone and was throwing the puck around well, keeping Port off balance and chasing the puck. The Port Perry goalie was com- ing up big and Scott Harper and Jeff Neal had to do some hard work to get the puck out over the blue line and break up the Lindsay attack without any more damage being done. The first period ended with the scoreboard reading Lindsay 1 - Port Perry 0. Shots on goal in the opening period were Lind- say eight, Port Perry seven. The second period started at a high pitch with Lindsay out- hustling Port to the puck. Port was about a stride and a half be- hind Lindsay all night but Port never gave up trying. Lindsay opened up a two-goal lead at the 11 minute mark when they were on the power play and had the man advantage. At 9:30, Port had Lindsay deep in their own zone when Brad Johnston hit Aaron Chambers cruising in the slot, over to Deryk Camp- bell at the side of the net, as he tipped the puck into the open corner to close the gap to 2-1. Lindsay was still passing the puck well and firing a lot of rub- ber at the Port Perry net. At 7:10, Port dodged another bul- let as they killed off a two-man penalty successfully. As the sec- ond period was winding down, Lindsay was outhustling and outshooting the Port Perry boys and with 35 seconds left on the clock, Lindsay scored to make the score 3-1 in Lindsay's favor. The third period got under- way with Port having to play catchup hockey. Port had to get some goals and get them quick, but it just wasn't in the cards. The Overhead Doors captain, David Gainey, tried time and again to set up a play to grab a fast goal or two but it wasn't to be as the Lindsay forecheckers were all over the place. Lindsay scored at 13:40 while enjoying a man advantage on the power play and another goal on a re- bound at 10:43 to make the score 5-1 in Lindsay's favor. The 'never say die Doorsmen' came back with a goal of their own when Jeff Neal blasted one from the point and Ryan McQuade deflected the shot over to Deryk Campbell at the side of the Lindsay net and scored on the acrobatic goalie to narrow the margin again to 5-2. At 8:56 of the third period, Lindsay was passing the puck well in the Port Perry zone while on the power play and 'boom' the Lindsay player paid big time when he got hit by a Nick Pelyk bodycheck. Ouch!! Lindsay scored at 3:43 on an- other rebound to make the score 6-2. When things go bad, they really go bad as Lindsay let a shot go from the point, off their own player's elbow standing in front of the Port Perry net and 'he scores!' to give Lindsay a commanding 7-2 lead. Port was pressing Lindsay in their own zone at 1:15 when the Lindsay goaltender robbed Justin (Cat) Sheehey on a point blank drive to turn the Port Perry team away empty-handed. The game ended with Lindsay defeating Port Perry 7-2. Shots on goal were Lindsay 19 - Port Perry eight. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. Hon- orable Mention for Good Hustle goes to Blayne Kinnunen and Brad Johnston. Jeff Neal and Scottie Harper get the nod for Good Defensive Effort. As the players left the ice, the moms and dads packed away their Tylenol 3s after a tought night at the rink'. Remember, boys, "It's easy to point the finger at somebody else when you lose," but, it you listen to your coach and play as a 'team', things al- ways get better. Good Luck in the Peterbo- rough Tournament this week- end.
