Pineridge Sports Atom Bs busy at home and on road Pineridge Sports Atom 2 team have had a busy week of hockey both at home and on the road. Thursday night our team played against the Oshawa Bruins. This was an exciting game of end-to-end hockey. The Bruins got on the scoreboard first, but Pineridge Panthers showed their stuff by scoring two quick ones. The first Pine- ridge goal was scored by Mike Milligan, assisted by Jason Howarth and Matt McGarry. The second goal was scored by hardworking Gerard Timmers, assisted by Mike Dalby and Ian Garnett. At the 6:22 mark of the sec- ond period, Matt Skerratt popped one in the net on a nice feed from Mike Wiseman. Also assisting was Trevor Weisflock. The score at the end of the sec- ond was 3-2 for Pineridge. In the third period, Oshawa scored to tie the game. The goaltend- ing tandem of Ryan Woods and Shawn Martin stopped numer- ous chances by Oshawa to keep the game even. At the 7:25 mark, Timmers scored the win- ning goal, assisted by Garnett. Final score 4-3 for the Pineridge Panthers. Friday night our team played the first game of a two-day tour- nament in Sutton. Their oppo- nents were Sutton's Atom A Rangers. This was a rough and tumble affair which our boys were not familiar with. Pine- ridge had trouble clearing their zone even though our defensive core of John Burnett, Scott Duncan, Mike Dalby, Tyler Houthuys, and Jason Howarth were playing spirited hockey. Our only goal was scored by Weisflock, assisted by Skerratt. Ryan Woods played well be- tween the pipes even though the final score was 5-1 for Sut- ton. The second game of the tour- nament was played on Satur- day against Mooretown. This was a very hard-fought game which could have gone either way. First goal was scored by Weisflock, assisted by Dalby and Houthuys. In the second pe- riod, Mooretown tied the score but Port fought back to take the lead on a goal by McGarry, as- sisted by Dalby. Before the end of the second, Mooretown tied the score once again. The play seesawed back and forth with Port hitting goalposts, and com- ing very close to scoring, but we came up empty handed. Moore- town snuck one in to win the game 3-2. The third and final game was played against the Sutton Atom IT team. Pineridge was on the scoreboard first on a nice end- to-end rush by Garnett, assist- ed by Timmers. After our strong start, Sutton scored three quick goals and took the lead 3-1. Pineridge came roar- ing back in the third period when Skerratt threaded the needle, assisted by Wiseman. Strong effort by Mike LeFort, Ryan Haslam and the rest of the squad: just could not over- come the one goal deficit. The fi- nal outcome was 3-2 for Sutton. This was an exciting tourna- ment that showed fine coaching by Ritchie LeFort, Bill Weis- flock, Bob Dalby and Randy Wiseman. Our boys had fun and showed determination. Keep up the good work. The next game is Thursday night at 8 p.m. against Peterborough at Scugog Arena. Hope to see eve- ryone there. IGA Juniors' rally falls short The Port Perry IGA Juniors travelled to Pickering to contest another difficult opponent. All games to this point of the sea- son had been nail biters that ei- ther team could have won. This game proved to be no different. In the first minute of play, Shona Moase found the range, quickly snapping a wrist shot into the top corner after she re- ceived a centering pass from Cara Vander Slagt. Pickering rallied to tie the game in short order though and the seesaw match had begun. On the ensuing free pass, Port took the ring into the Pick- ering end where Shona found Natasha Burgess who gave Port the lead, sliding the ring under- neath the Pickering netminder. Again, however, the hosts evened the match quickly. The next goal was also for Pickering to give them a 3-2 lead. Lisa Bonser, playing against her old teammates, scored her first of the game to notch the score at threes with the assist going to Natasha. The period ended with Pickering having a 5-3 lead after two quick goals. The uphill battle was ahead as Pickering netted the first goal of the second period, but the girls responded to the chal- lenge. Linda Payne started the play that would get Port back into the game. Linda fed Dana Hooker who passed to Lisa and it was a two-goal deficit. Cara found Shona with an excellent pass and the IGA'team was within one. Pickering dug in and their powerful number 5 re- turned the two goal lead with an unassisted marker. Port continued to hustle in this rough and tumble affair, with Natasha finding Shona, who completed the hat trick making the score 7-6. With 1:05 to play, a time out was called and the goaltender, Katie Se- nyk, was out of the net. Port had several attempts at eve- ning the score but the bounce went to Pickering who came down the ice to get the insu- rance marker with just seconds to play. The IGA girls played an ex- cellent game, with no prisoners being taken by either side but again came up on the losing end of a close game. Let's get every- one to practice, girls, and these losses will turn into victories! Bantams lose 7-4 to Oshawa squad On Nov. 8, the Country Style Bantams were up against Co- bourg in the Scugog Cathedral. Port Perry came out flying. Jason Logan scored first as- sisted by Chris Drury, at the 12:51 mark of the first period. Jason then scored our second goal, this time assisted by Mike Morden. We then ran out of fuel. Our tanks completely fell off for the rest of the game. Co- bourg scored eight unanswered goals before the game was fin- ished. We lost 8-2. On Saturday, Nov. 14, we travelled to North Oshawa to play the Oshawa Blackhawks of the Little NHL. We came out flying once again. The opening goal was again scored by Jason Logan. Adam Hunter assisted. Next, Mike Morden found the mesh, with the assist going to Adam Hunter. Oshawa then came back, and scored three first period goals. Going into the second period, it was Oshawa 3, Port Perry 2. The second period saw Oshawa shut us down and score three more goals of their own. In their third period, we decided to play some more hockey. Tim Fitzpa- trick had a nice goal, but a bad celebration. Way to go, Fitz! Top corner! Next, the affiliated player line of Adam Jones, Der- ek Tindall and Seth Gray got to- gether and popped one home. Adam beat the Oshawa goalie with an assist going to each of his linemates. The final score was Oshawa 7, Port Perry 4. Upcoming home action for Port Perry sees Port Hope come to town on Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Be there. Tweens come out on the losing end Port's ten Guardian Drug Tween As put together a valiant effort behind the superb goal tending of Lauren Christie, only to come up on the short end of a 2-1 final score. In Markham on Saturday, the home team opened the scor- ing midway through the first period. The fast pace and out- standing defensive play kept this one close until Jennifer El- liot's unassisted high shot tied up the score for Port Perry. ith 1:30 left to play, a solo ef- fort by Rene Levine put Mark- ham ahead to stay. Final score 2-1. Sunday's opponent for the Tween As was a finely tuned Oshawa squad - last season's Petite "AA" Provincial champs. This time, Oshawa proved to be too much for our Guardian Tweens. Again Jennifer Elliot opened up the scoring on a fine pass from Laura Hooker. Port's girls pressed for more, just missing numerous chances. Port's Tween As controlled the play for the first fast-paced peri- od before a pretty pass setup Oshawa's tying goal. Steady goal tending by Laur- en Christie kept the first period tied. Three quick goals by Oshawa did put this one out of reach but Port's girls did not give up as Janine Hammond found the high corner, assisted by Alechia Cracknell and Bon- ni-Jo Norton. The Tween coaches are very pleased with the team effort in our close games. It will take time and lots of effort, but this young team will be there in each and every game.
