"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 23,1993 - 33 SNL DHE 72 20s, Zr) 0s, : The rink skipped by Kelly Evans won the Cinemax/Rent and Save Ladies Bonspiel held November 17. Pictured presenting the trophy are Elgin and Anne-Marie Knopp to team members Kelly Evans, Laural Griffen, Karen Parish and Carol Jackson. Drop games to Bowmanville, Lakefield 'Coach not ready to panic despite MoJack losses by Shawn Bastarache Despite losing two of three straight games on home ice, in- cluding a 6-4 decision Sunday night against the Lakefield Chiefs, no one in the Port Perry ModJacks' organization is ready to push the panic button, espe- cially head coach Brad Menzies. Though his team hasn't played its best hockey recently, and though one of his top snip- ers, Shannon Todd, has strug- gled out of the gate this season, Menzies feel his club, now with a record of 6-4-2, just hasn't been getting the breaks. "I'm not worried," said Men- zies following the loss to the Chiefs Sunday night. "As long as we're getting our chances (to score), we're okay. If you're not getting the chances, that's when you start worrying." The ModJacks did get their chances against Lakefield, but were unfortunate to run head- long into a red-hot Dan Dupuis in the Chiefs goal. Dupuis may have made the difference in the end as he made several key saves to keep his team in the lead. Port Perry opened the scoring at 13:67 of the first period when Clair Cornish sent rookie Todd Smart in alone on Dupuis. The 18-year-old Port Perry native beat the Chiefs' netminder with a nice move to the backhand for his first goal of the 1992-93 sea- son. The lead would be shortlived, however, as Menzies watched his club revert to the same kind of sluggish play that cost them two points against Bowman- ville one night eariier. Scott Cummings tied the score at 14:22 after the Port Perry defence was unable to clear a rebound. ModJacks' Shawn Larocque stopped the in- itial shot but had little chance against Cummings as he found the net to draw his club even. Then not even two minutes lat- er, Scott Hartwick pounced on another loose puck in front of Larocque to give the Chiefs the lead. Of course all things, good or bad, come in threes and so it was that Lakefield's Shawn Farnell deflected a point shot behind Larocque with only eight seconds remaining in the first, staking the Chiefs to a 3-1 cushion. Todd Smart "We let in three lazy goals. That's what happened in the first period tonight," said Men- zies. "When you're down 3-1 after the first and you're struggling to score goals as it is, it's tough to come back." he said. The ModJacks did come back, however, and pulled to within a goal during a second period much more indicative of the Keith Leslie kind of effort Menzies expects from his team. Kevin McDonald, playing for- ward at the end of a Port Perry powerplay, shovelled in a re- bound to the left of Dupuis, af- ter Dupuis had made a brilliant save on Shannon Todd. It was during the second peri- od that Dupuis really shone. While the MoJacks attempted to pick up the pace, the Chiefs' netminder stymied them at every opportunity, most nota- bly with saves in tight against 'the likes of Cornish and Todd. Port Perry tied the score just 11 seconds into the third as big Keith Leslie scored. Leslie, at 61", 185 pounds, has a surpris- ingly soft touch with the puck and he proved it with a picture perfect wraparound marker. Lakefield regained the lead Turnto Page 34 Auctioneers bring home hardware from tournament Tottenham Tournament Game One Saturday, Nov. 20 The Novice I Pearce Auction- eers came out skating in the first game of the Tottenham Tournament. The Jeff Tarbotton, Spencer Churchill and Kevin Robins trio were hustling all game which gave them many shots on net, and earned them the first goal of the game, scored by Tarbot- ton, midway through the first period. Tottenham came back shortly after with their first goal. Garret Brown and Dylan Harper were solid on defence, helping out Thomas Lee in net who had some spectacular saves. Tottenham came back mid- way in the second period with two goals. Pearce Auctions were not about to give up. Mark Duncan and Gordon Smith were tireless in their great back-checking ef- forts. Always energetic Trevor Lance started off the third peri- od with an unassisted goal to bring the score 3-2. With strong skating Justin Moffatt and Geoffrey Simpson kept the pressure on trying to tie up the game: With a few min- utes left Mike Thompson scored the third goal, assisted by de- fenceman Jameson Smith, who - had brought the puck out of his own end to tie the game. Always playing effortlessly on defence Steve MacLennan scored: the winning goal, two minutes into overtime from a great pass from Trevor Lance. It was a very exciting game!!! Jameson Smith won M.V.P. for the game and Steve MacLen- nan won the award for best de- fensive player. Game Two In game two we went against our Arch rivals from Uxbridge. Suffering from two earlier de- feats in regular season play, "Crafty" Coach Spencley had the boys determined to steal a win. "And steal we did." We jumped out in front early in the first period as Trevor Lance fed Mark Duncan with a quick breakout pass. Mark carried the puck the length of the ice and rifled a shot high over the goalies shoulder. Uxbridge came right back with several good scoring chances but our dependable backstop Thomas Lee made some great saves with Jamie Smith, Dylan Harper, Steven MacLennan, and Garret Brown clearing any loose pucks. : Finally not to be denied Ux- bridge capitalized on a turnover to knot the score at 1-1 with only six seconds left in the peri- od. They didn't let up and kept coming at us the entire second period but Thomas kept "shut- ting the door" to keep us in the game. Our chance finally came in the third period as Justin Mof- fat stole the puck behind Ux- bridge's net and fed a nice pass to Jeff Tarbotton in the slot. Jeff made no mistake as he "bulged the twine" for the go ahead and game winning goal. Thomas Lee was awarded the defensive M.V.P. and Trevor Lance was the offensive M.V.P. so now with the two points in Spencley's hip pocket the boys were off to the championship game. The championship game matched us up against Mid- land. We seemed to set the tem- po of the game as the line of Tar- botton, Robbins and Churchill forechecked endlessly to keep Midland back on their heels. This paid off as Trevor Robbins grabbed a loose puck and slipped a pass to Jeff Tarbotton who slid the puck across theline for our first goal. Then Trevor Lance went to work scoring a natural "hat trick" with help from Gordon Smith and Dylan Harper. With a victory in sight, Mike Thompson and Geoffrey Simpson kept up the tenacious forechecking shutting down Midland's attack. Jeff Tarbot- ton netted his second of the game as speedy Spencer Churchill snagged a loose puck and slid him a perfect pass. With the boys still pouring iton - Geoffrey Simpson scores from Jamie Smith and Trevor Lance bags his fouth of the game from Mark Duncan and Gordon Smith to make it 7-0. Backstop Thomas Lee was called upon to make some key saves to preserve the shutout. Game. Game M.V.P. was Jeff Tar- botton with Stevie MacLennan being the defensive M.V.P. Thanks guys and coaching staff for the very entertaining week- end of hockey. A Great Team Effort Legionaires tie On Nov. 12 Port Perry hosted the Port Hope Peewees in a re- turn match. Late in the first pe- riod of a fast moving game Ca- sey vanSchagen found the mark with a slapshot from the point on a pass from David Gainey, the only scoring in the period. The second period ended with the Legionaires ahead 3-1. Adam Jones netted a one-timer passed by David Gainey from behind the net. Late in the peri- od, the Panthers scored but a minute later Seth Gray, on a pass from Derek Tindall, blis- tered a Siapshior from the point past the Port Hope goalie to make the score 3-1. In the third period Port Hope fought back to tie the score. With just two minutes left, Ian Parliament shot the puck through the crowd in front of the net and found the mark, the result of two nice passes by Ca- sey vanSchagen and Wyatt Park. A win however was not to be ours as Port Hope scored once again to tie it up. The final score 44. Dave Gainey and Nick Pelyk from the 'B' team, filling in for injuries, both played a strong game.
