l { it kl { / "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 30,1993 < 9 A ME Shepherd calls first month in politics a learning process 'By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The past month has been a learning experience, says newly elected MP Alex Shepherd. "It's certainly very new. I've had to change my focus." Mr. Shepherd was selected as the Durham Riding MP for the Liberal Party in the October 25 election defeating seven other candidates for the job. "A lot of it is a learning pro- cess," he said. "It's a tremen- dously challenging time." Mr. Shepherd said much of Thief makes off with parrots A cagey thief flew the coop re- cently with more than $1,400 worth of goods. - According to Durham Region- al Police, a resident in Leask- _ dale had six parrots taken fram an unlocked shed on November 28 during the night. Two of the birds were worth $1,200. the past month has been spent learning the local issues. This has been done by maintaining close contact with the residents. "Most people are impressed with this," he said. "I don't find too many people do this." But he is finding that politics is time consuming and is xealiz- ing quickly that it is a seven- day-a-week job. espite this element, he has ~ found the job enjoyable. If learning the local issues was not enough for the rookie MP, he is also saddled with the task of learning his way around parliament. Various training sessions, coupled with exten- sive reading lists on parliamen- tary procedures, have taken up much of his time. And while Mr. Shepherd set- tles into the life of an MP, he is finding it hard to get a sense of permancy without a fixed office. He spent a number of weeks looking for an office to house his constituency office. And after finding the suitable space he must now wait for the renova- tions to be completed before he and his staff can move in. He ex- pects to move from his tempo- rary office in Port Perry to the new office at the end of this week. This office will be centrally lo- cated in north Oshawa to serve as many of the constituents as possible. With his experience as an ac- countant, Mr. Shepherd has vowed to be a cost-conscious MP. Proof of this is the consider- able time he took to negotiate the rent for his office space. He will also travel by train be- tween his riding and Ottawa. While in Ottawa he will share an apartment with one of his sons who is attending universi- ty. "I'm very focused in trying to bring my budgets significantly under and in the process bring back the benefits to the Canadi- an people," he said. With his life going in a num- ber of different directions, he be- lieves once he is settled in his of- fice and parliament begins in mid-January that he will get a sense of direction. ~ ourselves who will be struggling through the Christmas season. 2nd ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE Dear Readers: As we approach this joyous time of the year, we should be aware there are many in our community less fortunate than The Port Perry Star, in co-operation with Operation Scugog, is again this year sponsoring a Christmas Food Drive to help those in need.
