"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Gord Mills Your senior at the park If you read my other column, Queen's Park Report, you would have read about the deci- sion not to make any charges to drugs for seniors. The plan sug- gested would have seen some- thing along the lines of people below a given income level pay- ing nothing, while those moreX affluent would have paid up to a total of about $150 a year. Once the $150 was reached, there wouldn't have been any further charges for that year. It was suggested that people below a certain income level, the poor, would also have been given "drug benefits under the Ontario Drug Benefit Plan. I still think that would be a good idea. ~ I tended to agree with the Minister of Health at first, that some of the more affluent sen- iors could well afford the deduc- tion plan, but what stuck in my gullet was the principle of it. Af- ter all, most of us have never cost the province one cent, and most of us have worked to save money for our retirement. Yet there we were, faced with pay- ing for drugs out of the money we worked hard for to secure some small degree of comfort as we got older. I took my concerns in open debate at our caucus meetings, and in some instanc- es was soundly taken to task over my stand. The issue gained some sup- port among MPPs who were be- ing "got at" by seniors in their ridings. At our Fall Retreat in Ottawa I raised the issue direct- ly with the premier, while he sat at the same table eating lunch. After listening me out, Bob looked up and much to my surprise said he agreed with me. The ice was breaking, I could feel itin my bones. Over the past couple of weeks, I heard through the po- litical grapevine that cabinet discussion was centering around the issue as well. My warning of terrible disenchant- ment by seniors with our gov- ernment over this issue, finally paid off. I'm pleased, I hope you are as well. Last Friday afternoon, I was at the Oshawa General Hospi- tal for the opening of their new mammogram facility. The in- terior decoration of the unit and the staff compliment each oth- er. Everything is designed to re- lieve the anxiety and stress as- sociated with the examination. I can recommend it, if you have to attend for a mammogram. They already have a chemother- apy unit, the radiation would complete the need of this area without travel to Toronto. I will continue to work with the Has- pital Board of Directors and the Ministry of Health in an at- tempt to make the Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital a Regional Cancer Treatment Centre. Until next week - keep smil- ing.
