As participants in Canada's fastest growing winter sport, you and I will be caught up in the momentum. We will also be the prime beneficiaries of many new programs and ideas to improve our snowmobiling. Ontario's "Get Ready For Snowmobiling Week 93" is an ideal opportunity to discover some of these innovations. The SNO-TRAC partnership between the province and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) will put about $8 million to work on our snowmobile trails for this winter. We'll see the difference in wider, safer trails and better signage. We'll feel the difference in smoother trails. In fact, 37 new groomers were purchased in 1992/93, making Ontario's fleet of groomers the largest in the world. Of course to ride OFSC trails we'll need a trail permit. This winter, there's a reworked, $40 , seven-day temporary permit available to tourists from out-of-province. For $150 there's even a new Ontario/Quebec joint permit, "Rendezvous '94". But, most of us will buy a regular OFSC permit and that's a better deal than ever before. First, the price remains the same as last year-regularly $80 with an early bird price of $65 if purchased prior to December 1. Compare that investment to the daily or even hourly rates of other winter activities and you'll agree that it's still the best recreational value on the snow. Permits are available from most snowmobile-related businesses or from your local snowmobiie club. Our purchase still entitles us to ride anywhere at any time. It continues to include a gratis Ontario Snowmobiler/Provincial Trail Map Atlas package retailing for about $27. But that's only the beginning of this year's value. At no additional cost, the OFSC is providing us with several attractive decals suitable for application to helmets, sleds, trailers or vehicles. All are highly reflective for safer night time visibility. Three OFSC shield logos allow us to declare our pride of membership in the world's best snowmobile federation. The other, an anti-drinking message, is provided so that each of us can signify our own personal commitment to and support of, the RIDE SAFE, RIDE SOBER campaign. Similar to the various ribbon campaigns, when affixed to your sled, it's your chance to say "Hey! Don't drink and ride!" every time you hit the trails. But that's still not all! We also get the new OFSC Sled Smart Card. This plasticized wallet card entitles you to year round special deals and bonus offers from participating companies across the province. Effectively, this means with regular use that you can probably save as much or more than the cost of your permit. Current lists of participating companies are available from your local club and are published monthly in snowmobile magazines. Participants will also display a special "Sled Smart Partner" decal. This unique added value package and an aggressive new OFSC trail permit marketing campaign (you may have seen the ads and the "Trail Permits Sold Here" posters) are indicative of new directions in Ontario snowmobiling. As snowmobiling's leading provincial agency, the OFSC is taking last year's 25 per cent permit sales increase as confirmation of a dramatic growth tangent. It plans to maximize this growth by attracting new snowmobilers to our sport and by encouraging the rest of us to increase our involvement. The federation is even partnering with the province on initiative to entice more out-of-province snowmobilers to visit Ontario. Snowmobiling has become big business. Major corporations from outside the snowmobiling fraternity are already coming on board as sponsors. Government, law enforcement, insurance and tourism agencies are partnering in various OFSC projects. Media is recognizing both the scope and newsworthiness of the snowmobiling market. Non-snowmobiling advertisers are beginning to target us with their messages. And almost 100 Ontario counties and municipalities have approved formal proclamations officially declaring "Get Ready For Snowmobiling Week '93." For you and I, "Get Ready For Snowmobiling Week '95" participation may be as simple as buying a trail permit or volunteering an afternoon or trail work to our local club. It may be making plans to ride for Easter Seals Kids in your local Snowarama, or to explore new territory on your winter vacation. But it's also an ongoing state of mind that anticipates another great winter of safe riding, of adventure and excitement, or camaraderie and fun, and of bigger and better things to come. Until the next time, happy trails and remember: Sled Smart RIDE SAFE, RIDE SOBER. For snowmobile information call the OFSC at 705-739-7669.
