, | 38 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 30, 1993 co TOT dt ve Whi tb AN "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice™ Peewee Bs nip Peterborough in shootout On Saturday, Nov. 20, the Scugog Overhead Doors Peewee "B' hockey club played host to the Peterborough Nationals. The game started out slow with both teams testing the goalies and seeing how much the other defence would Jet them get away with. The early play was back and forth with some good hits made along the boards by both clubs. At 10:23, the line of Travis Pickard, Alex Wordley, Justin (Cat) Sheehey with Ryan McQuade and Jeff Neal on de- fence had Peterborough hemmed in their own zone and if it wasn't for the Peterborough goalie being sharp, Port Perry would have taken the early lead. Peterborough opened the scoring at 7:42 to take the early lead 1-0. Peterborough started throwing the body around but quickly found out that they had better stick to hockey as Port know how to bodycheck also. Port Perry was knocking on the Peterborough door for the last three minutes of the first period but nobody would let them in. As Barry Johnston would say 'the Port goalie saw more rub- 'ber than a dead squirrel on the Oshawa road'. At the end of the first period of play, Peterbo- rough had the lead 1-0. As the second period started, the Port Perry boys turned it up a notch as they took the play right to Peterborough. At 9:34, Port was on the power play and Aaron Chambers took control at centre ice, up to Blayne Kinnu- nen streaking up the right boards, and Blayne feathered a perfect pass to David Gainey in the slot, over to Scott Sanderson and 'see you later' as he scored on the sprawling Peterborough Av AECL TRANSPORTATION Sage PROCESS IMPACTS FUNDING 1-800-665-0436 Yes! Port had things going pretty much their own way at 7:30 as Peterborough was having prob- lems getting by the Port Perry forecheckers. Peterborough fi- nally scored at 6:34 to go ahead A 4:08, Port came flying over the Peterborough blue line on a neat tic-tac-toe play as David Gainey hit Blayne Kinnunen in the slot over to Scott Sanderson at the side of the Peterborough net as he buried it deep in the back of the Peterborough goal to tie the game at 2-2. Less than a minute later, Port was giving | the Peterborough goalie a hard time when Alex Wordley picked up a rebound as he wasted no time in 'making a night deposit' in the open corner to take the lead 3-2. Peterborough came right back with a goal of their own at 2:10 to tie the game at 3- 3 to the delight of the Peterbo- rough fans' cheering and clang- ing of cow bells. With time run- ning out in the period and the score tied 3-3, Port came right back with 42 ticks left on the clock as Port set it up in the Pe- terborough zone, Blayne Kin- nunen to Scott Sanderson in the slot, over to David Gainey at the side of the net and 'he scores!' Yes! Gainey scores to give Port a 4-3 lead as the horn sounds to end the second period of play. David Gainey and Scott Sanderson were playing good heads-up hockey. Port Perry was playing well "and playing as a team going into the third period. Brad Johnston was doing what he does the best and that is fore- checking and making things happen (generally being a pest) and that's saying it mildly, more like driving the other team nuts. Both teams were getting some good chances when Peterborough caught Port on a line change and they scored at the 14:00 mark to tie the game at 4-4. At 10:03, Port - had Peterborough trapped in their own zone for nearly two minutes, but they couldn't jam the puck in the net. Both goal- ies were doing their job keeping their team in this tight game. At 8:03 Blayne Kinnunen put a nice pass over to Scott Sander- son to the side of the net as Da- vid Gainey fired one through heavy traffic and in the heart of the net to put Port ahead 5-4. With the period winding down and the action fast and furious, Port kept the play in the Peter- borough zone as much as possi- ble for the last couple of min- utes, trying to take some heat off their own goaltender. With one minute left to play in the game, David Gainey was in all alone on the Peterborough goal- ie but, the Peterborough goal- tender turned him away empty- handed. With less than a min- ute to go in the game, Peterbo- rough took the play one last time into the Port Perry zone but; there-wasn't any more scor- "ingin thegame,, * , ". ° {Peterborough wiitshot - borough by a score of 5-4. Good Defensive road to Lindsay to take on the Lindsay Peewees in their own barn. Lindsay lit up the score- board first at 10:12 to take the .early lead 1-0. There were a lot of good checks handed out along . the boards by Travis Pickard and Aaron Chambers. Both teams had some good times and some bad times as both the goal- tenders were treated to some early work. Port Perry came right back at 5:38 when Deryk Campbell picked up a loose puck deep in the Lindsay zone, over to Nick Pelyk who air- mailed one past the shocked Lindsay goaltender to tie the game at 1-1. Lindsay, who plays a clutch and grab style of hock- ey, used this to try and slow the speedy Port Perry team down to their pace. The second period got going in a hurry when Lindsay scored at 14:00 to go ahead 2-1. Less than a minute later at 13:40, Lindsay struck again to take a 3-1 lead. Port got things going halfway through the second pe- riod when they were coming at Lindsay in waves. The line of Brad Johnston, Deryk Camp- bell and Nick Pelyk with Scott Harper and Aaron Chambers got the ball rolling for Port. Jeff Neal, Ryn McQuade, Justin Sheehey, Alex Wordley and Travis Pickard were also instru- mental in the rejuvenation of the Port Perry team. The whole team suddenly started to come to life. Port was really pouring it on and taking the play right to Lindsay when Lindsay scored with 31 seconds showing on the clock to go ahead 4-1. During intermission, the boys 'must-have regrouped-while in the dressing room under their leadership, because they came out flying in the third period. " For the first two minutes, Port had Lindsay back pedallin when David Gainey and Scott Sanderson, Travis Pickard and the defence of Scott Harper and Ryan McQuade started using the Linsday goalie for target practice. Jeff Neal played a good third period of nice two- - way hockey. With Port apply- ing plenty of heat, at 8:26 David Gainey put a nice pass over to Scott Sanderson, to Travis Pickard as he scored to make the score 4-2. 'Don't go away folks, this thing isn't over yet' at 7:15 Brad Johnston put aside his favorite role (forechecking) long enough to strip the puck off of a Lindsay player, take control of the puck and faked the defenceman out of his jock and fired one to the top shelf to score unassisted to make it a one-goal game. With the score 4-3 and Port pressing, it looked as if the comeback was a possibility. With 2:30 showing on the clock, Port pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker trying to score the equalizer. Port took control and marched the puck right down the full length of the | ice, into the Lindsay zone and *- with A457 Toft on the clock the ded, and the referee x blown everything in 'the'third period but his Whistle) "did it 'again, this time blowing the game 'itself when he an- nounced that the game was To 30.
