Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Durham's first woman police inspector took over duties as Officer in Charge of 26 Division on Monday. Nancy Desjardine assumed the position from Inspector Dan Matthews, who had been appointed to the position as a temporary assignment just two months ago. The new inspector is a 20-year veteran of Durham Regional Police, and served four years with the Metropolitan Toronto Police before accepting a posi- tion in Durham in 1974. At the time of her hiring, she became the second woman police officer on the force. Since accepting a position with Durham Regional Police, Inspector Desjardine has experienced a series of "firsts" with the department. In an interview with The Port Perry Star last week she remi- nisced about her ground-break- ing career, starting with her appointment as the first woman Detective in 1983. Other firsts during her career were as Patrol Sergeant in Jan. 1990, Staff Sgt. in Oct. 1990, Detective Sgt. in charge of young offenders in Jan. 1992 and her latest, Inspector and officer in charge of 26 Division. While the Port Perry area is very familiar to the new inspec- tor, having lived on Scugog Island for 10 years before mov- ing in 1983, she's looking for- ward to learning more about the Uxbridge, Sunderland and northern areas of the division. Following her appointment last week, Deputy Alex McMurray praised Inspector Desjardine calling her a "very experienced police officer with 'the ability to adapt to any con- ditions and get along with peo- ple in any situation." When asked if she felt her appointment had anything to do with being a female, Inspector Desjarine was quick to down- play the fact saying, "I'm a police officer who got the promo- tion because I was qualified." Inspector Matthews, who replaced Inspector Ross Smith after being moved to Oshawa, now joins his predecessor at headquarters having been appointed to the Operations Support Service. Asked how he felt about leav- ing the area, Inspector Matthews said he knew it was a temporary position, and he had last enjoyed his time as head of the division. "It was a good learning experience," he said. In assuming responsibility as officer in charge of 26 Division Monday, Inspector Desjardine heads up a staff of 42 constables, four Criminal Intelligence Branch officers and four sergeants who patrol and serve the communities of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock townships. It will be a couple of mont before area residents will s Inspector Desjardine in a poli uniform, as her new attire has yet to be delivered. In the meantime, 1 ce the - Inspector plans to get to know the people and communties which make up her new home.
