After participating in the Scugog 1 tournament, the team advanced to the Durham North finals where they - tied for the top spot but were eliminated when the point spread system was used to deter- mine a winner. Port had lost its last two games on home ice and Brad Menzies was hoping his club could end the losing streak and move into second place with a win over Bowmanville. The two teams combined for 18 minutes in penalties in a scoreless first period. Bowmanville's Drew Allenby took a roughing penalty late in the period which would result in the MoJacks opening the scoring at 2:07 in the second pe- riod. Though the Eagles' penalty had expired, Port Perry con- trolled the puck deep in the of- fensive zone. Defenceman Ke- vin McDonald, playing forward on the power play, muscled the puck in front to Steve Laird. Laird took a swing at the bounc- ing puck and hit a line drive that got by a sprawling Bow- manville goalkeeper. From that point on, however, the MoJacks were unable to beat Barry Crawford who, for a 16 year old, showed incredible poise in the Eagle's net. Crawford's stingy play began to frustrate the MoJacks. par- ticularly Shannon Todd, who had several opportunities to score. Todd has fallen on hard times this season after leading all Mo- Jacks scorers in 1992-93 with 69 points. With only a handful of goals so far, the second year centre is trying desperately to break out of his slump and help his team stay close to the top of the Central Division. On Thursday, though, it was Crawford who was the story, keeping Port Perry at bay until his teammates could get the of- fence going. Todd Cannings did just that with a power play goal at 8:19 of the second period. / With Todd Smart serving a slashing penalty, Cannings picked up a loose puck in front of the Port Perry net and wired a shot over the glove of Mo- Jacks' netminder Rick Hutchin- son, to draw the Eagles level. It was Cannings who scored the winner at 12:41, knocking in a rebound for his second of the night. Bowmanville's David Watt completed the scoring at 8:20 of the third period, beating Hutchinson who, despite tak- ing the 3-1 loss, played well in only his second start since re- turning from appendix surgery. Having Hutchinson back is essential if Port Perry hopes to finish the season strong, as- suming they can get the offence and Shannon Todd firing on all cylinders before too long. By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The first-place Uxbridge Bruins entered Scugog Arena December 5 and were greeted with a 6-1 loss at the hands of the third place Port Perry Mo- Jacks. The Bruins, who looked any- thing like the league leaders, were met at every turn by the green and white. The ModJacks took the lead quickly, with just under five minutes played in the game, as Todd Smart finished off a three- way passing play with Jeremy Ross and Gavin Cochrane. At the 7:20 mark Ian Titter- ton made it 2-0 as he took a Du- ane Empringham pass and cut in front of the net to easily dump it past the sliding Uxbridge goaltender. Uxbridge had a great oppor- tunity to get back into the game as they had a two-man advan- tage for close to two minutes, but some great poke-checking by the penalty-killing unit of IGA Juniors were edged by Barrie The I.G.A. Juniors hosted Barrie in the teams second meeting of the season and after an adventure in Nepean the girls were looking to turn things around. Barrie hit the scoreboard with the first two goals in what roved to be a high scoring af- air. Shona Moase got Port started when she snapped a wrist shot past the netminder after receiving a pass from Dana Hooker. Heather Tred- way, playing her strongest game of the year, evened the score on a pass from Shona with asizzler of a wrist shot. Heather completed a three way passing play started by Cara Vander Slagt and centred by Linda Payne to give Port the lead at the end of the first period. Barrie evened the score at 3-3 early in the second frame before Shona netted an unassisted goal from a free pass in the of- fensive end when she drilled a hard wrist shot that stuck in the back of the net to return the I.G.A. squad to a one goal lead. (Should the coach being calling plays?) Cara gave the home team some breathing room when she finished off a nice pass from Shona. ' The visitors pulled even with two goals from their trouble- some number four (a player to watch in the next match!) The line of Shona, Heather and Cara was flying as they each picked up a pair of goals. The last goal of the_triple pair was Cara's with the assist goin to Shona and Port had the lead once again. Not to be held in check the Barrie team put two more in the net in the last two minutes of play to eke out a victory over a Port Perry squad that played a much better game. Keep studying those plays girls you executed a much bet- ter game than the opposition and the final outcome was un- fortunate. Next week the 1.G.A. Juniors have a return engage- ment in Mississauga. YMCA basketball play is underway The YMCA first basketball 'season started on Wednesday, Dec. 1 with two games played at S.A. Cawker gym with a total of 43 boys and girls. In the Junior game the Globe- trotters beat the Bulls 12-4. Scoring for the Globetrotters were Dane Gray and Emma Marshall with four points each and two points each by Katie Berness and Ben Marshall. Scoring two points each for the Bulls were Burke Thomp- son and David Halward. Good efforts of passing, shooting and dribbling were made by Danny Halward, Chelsea Powell, Bos- MoJacks defeat Bruins, lose to Empringham and Jason Co- chrane turned the Bruins back at the blueline. Jason Cochrane put the Mo- Jacks up 3-0 ashe caughtup toa clearing pass sending him in alone. Assists on the play went to Shannon Todd and Brad Moase. The MoJacks took advantage on the powerplay, something Uxbridge failed to do all eve- ning, and scored their fourth of the night as Steve Laird notched a goal. Gavin Cochrane and Cornish picked up the as- sists. The Bruins did manage a goal at the 5:56 mark of the third as a bad angle shot slipped through ton Kowalczyk, Matthew Doug- las, Johnny Kyle, David Low and Devon Howson. } In the Senior game the Blues beat the Greys by a score of 46- 18. Leading the Blues was Jay Fletcher with 16 points, 10 points each by Carrie Ollerton and Mark Heffern, four points each by David Justynski and Carlos Connell and two points by Darren Kyle. Ben Stephen- son potted eight points for the Greys with Adam Shore with six points and two points each by Darryl Dalton and Jeremy Park rounded out the scoring for the Greys. Eagles the five-hole of Rick Hutchinson andinto thenet. The MoJacks added two more goals the first by Todd, from Cornish. Cochrane added his second of the night after a five- on-three shorthanded end-to- end rush that he slipped past the sprawling Uxbridge goalie. Todd Dennis picked up the lone assist. Next home action for the Mo- Jacks is" Thursday, Dec. 16 when the Lakefield Chiefs will be in town. On Sunday, Dec. 19 the MoJacks will host the Bob- caygeon Bullits during the Mo- Jacks annual Christmas Fami- ly Night.
