The first game was against Chinguacousy. There was no scoring in the first as both teams felt each other out. Early in the second Dann Lee, playing goal, fed a break- out pass to Scott Jeffrey who then passed to Adam Jones. Adam J. spotted Adam Hobbs breaking for open ice and hit him with a great lead pass, sending him in all alone. With a great wrist shot he beat the Chinguacousy goalie on the stick side. At the 1:14 mark of the third period, Seth Gray scored on a cannonading shot assisted by Troy Campbell. One minute lat- er, Scott Jeffrey tipped a shot to make it 3-0, with assists going to Wyatt Park and Adam J. Chinguacousy took a five min- ute penalty but the Port power play sputtered and Chingua- cousy came back with a short- handed goal to narrow the lead to 3-1. Port's power play got back on track and scored two goals end- ing the game at 5-1. The last two goals were scored by Troy and Adam J. with assists going to Casey vanSchagen, Seth and Derek Tindall. - Danny Lyons opened the scoring in the second game against Agincourt with a close in shot assisted by Troy and Ian Parliament. The Legionnaires went ahead 2-0 on a .goal by Adam J. burying his own re- bound. Jeff Ashton had made a good pass to Adam who was left alone in front of the net. Port seemed quite content with the 2-0 lead and, if it hadn't been for Shane Savage who robbed the Agincourt team, might have found themselves behind. In the third period Port did what they do best, found their " skating legs and took a 3-0 lead. Casey beat the goalie low on the stick side after receiving a nice pass from Derek and Adam J. With a couple of minutes left Agincourt pulled their goalie in an effort to break the shutout, however, Port put on the pres- sure and Adam H. scored in the empty net, assisted by Scott and Adam J. Shane got the shutout with good work from the de- fense (Casey, Glenn, Wyatt and Jeff) and penalty killers (Adam H., Danny, Troy and Ian). Our third game of the day was against Stirling. It was good to be back to full strength for this tournament. Scott Jef- frey was back after a leg injury which kept him out for four weeks, and Jon Froats wearing a cast after fracturing his wrist. Our first goal came on a nice passing play with Danny feed- ing Ian who beat the goalie with a good wrist shot. At the 5:22 mark, Adam J. got a wrap around goal after Mr. Cast (Jon) gave a quality body check to free the puck for Adam. Glenn McCready scored to make it 3-0 with a wicked slap shot from the point. In the second period, Adam J. skated in on net, made a beauti- ful pass to Derek who flipped the puck into the net to make it 4-0. In the third, Danny scored from a scramble assisted by Troy. Persistence paid off end- ing the game 5-0. Again it was good work from Dann Lee to get the shoutout and good support from our defense, penalty kill- ers and forwards, backchecking to help. On Nov. 29 the Legionaires travelled to Oshawa for an exhi- bition game with the LNHL Blackhawks and came away with a 2-1 win. Scott Jeffrey scored in the first with a shot deflected through the goalie's legs net by the Oshawa defense- man. Our second goal by Seth Gray was also unassisted. Seth made a shorthanded rush from his own blue line and while dragging two defensemen, flicked a nice wrist shot past the goalie. A short time later Oshawa notched their one and only marker. There was no scor- ing in the third period. On Dec. 3 we hosted Ux- bridge. At 14:18 Uxbridge opened the scoring. At 11:03 while Port was a man short, Derek Tindall skated behind the Uxbridge defense and with a good backhand shot beat the goalie assisted by Adam J. and Casey. Uxbridge took- the lead again at 9:21. A few minutes lat- er Adam Hobbs, with a good deke and a wrist shot beat the goalie again for our second shorthanded goal. Assists to Ca- sey and Jeff. There was a moment of disbe- lief in the second period when Ian Parliament's face mask be- came entangled with an Ux- bridge player's mask...The ref- eree must be good solving those wire puzzles as it didn't take him long to disconnect the two boys. The second period was all Port's. Glenn McCready re- ceived a pass from Adam J. skated end to end and scored with a deadly wrist shot. A min- ute later Derek blasted one in assisted by Casey and Danny. At 7:12 Adam J., tipped a hard shot by Derek while Uxbridge was playing a man short. Jeff just missed with a blaster late in the period, a period that Don Cherry would have liked. Ux- bridge came on in the third scor- ing two goals. With six Ux- bridge using six attackers in the dying moments Port held them off to win the game 5-4. On Dec. 4, the Legionaires travelled to Belleville on a rainy dark night with a large contin- gent of parents. The first period Shane started in net. Early in the period Port took a penalty but with our penalty killers working hard they killed it. At 10:08, Belleville opened the scoring 1-0. Then Seth went in on the net all alone but was robbed as the shot was deflected away. At 9:16 Belleville took a penalty and it was their turn to do some penalty killing. The next few minutes saw some fast end to end hockey. At 3:38, Der- ek outskated the defensemen to break away at great speed to tie the game at 1-1. In the last few minutes of the period Shane came up with some big saves to preserve the tie. In the second period, Seth was in again, playing strong in the opening seconds, ripping a wrist shot only to be robbed again. At the 13:07 mark Belle- ville took a five minute penalty and Port applied the pressure. At 11:41 Seth's determination paid off when his third attempt found the mark from just a few feet over the blue line. Assists from Casey and Troy. Score 2-1 for Port. The Legionaires were work- ing hard to make the most of Belleville's penalty when Adam J. took the reins for a wrap around beating the goalie...nice going Adam. Port leads 3-1. At 6:19 Dann Lee entered the net and Belleville took quick advan- tage of the change and scored to narrow the lead to 3-2. Dann was really being put to the test and after a number of saves Belleville scored again to tie the score. With Belleville starting to apply the pressure it was time to pull up our socks (and our jocks). Seth does just that and after Jon makes a big hit causing a turnover. Seth gets his second of the night putting Port in the lead again. Again Belleville took a penalty and Port replied with a goal by Adam J. assisted by Casey. Af- ter a well deserved break, both teams came out skating and working hard. At 10:19- Ian skated in on net, the puck went in and bounced out...the goal was disallowed. Continued good effort in front of the Belleville net was not to be rewarded and at 3:50 Belle- ville scored again. Port really applied the pressure in the dy- ing minutes of the third but Legionaires compete in Cobourg tourney couldn't find the mark. Belle- ville pulled their goalie and with 24 seconds left it paid off "big time. The game ended with the score tied 56-5. It was a great effort from eve- ryone. Special mention to Adam en who filled in for Wyatt on defense. Wyatt is under the weather but we hope to see him in the lineup again soon. van Camp Construction defeated Haugen's Restaurant 7-2 in Novice house league action of Port Perry Minor Hockey on Saturday morning. The game was close until Van \ Camp opened up the game in third period which featured two penalty shots. Port Perry Printing wins Port Perry Printing 3 Re/Max 0 Port Perry Printing, playing good positional hockey, came up with the winner in this match. Shepstone Haulage Petites split pair of league matches The Shepstone Haulage Pe- tite Bs split a pair of games on the weekend in two contests that were as different as day and night. In the first game on Saturday at Scugog Arena against Whitby, the girls came out flying and earned their first win of the season with a 4-0 shutout. Everything was working with the defence of Nicole, Heather, Kimberley and Stacey giving our goalie, Jill, super protection and moving the ring up ice and when Whitby did get in close Jill came up with several super saves, and a well-deserved shutout. And the offence was in high gear with some solid pass- ing and good positional play that kept the Whitby defence and goalie working all game. The Rockettes' goal scorers were Sarah, Leanne L., Kathe- rine and Stacey with assists go- ing to Sheena, Alaina, Leanne D., Rhea and Shannon. On Sunday, the team trav- elled to Pickering for an after- noon encounter with their Pick- ering counterpart at the new Pickering Recreation Complex that was very impressive to eve- ryone. On the ice though, the girls were outmatched by a well- balanced Pickering attack with a 6-1 win. The game was closer than the score indicated and with a few more breaks and bounces, the girls could have come out on top. Port's lone goal was scored on a nice passing play from Kimberley to Nicole to Stacey to the back of the net. The Rockettes have a chance to get even this weekend when their first opponent in the Scar- borough tournament is Picker- ing. It looks to be a busy week- end with four and possibly five games, a big challenge to the girls and one that they should be up and ready for. Stay turned for the results next week.
