"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 7,1993 - 3 Local roads program hailed as unique By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A local roads project is being hailed as unique by Durham's Works staff. Michael Wilson, a road design supervisor for Durham, said the recent road construction on Re- glonal Road 2 in Port Perry uti- 1zed a system in which all mate- rials were reused. The complete reconstruction, . road widening, sanitary water- main and storm sewage project saw materials from the existing road reclaimed for use in the new road. With the use of a pulverizer, the original asphalt was crushed into a granular form and used along with other ag- gregates to form the base for the newroad. "gy M & D Meats This project, which is one of the first of its kind in the area, was a success, said Mr. Wilson. "I was quite excited about it. It was one of the first projects in which all the materials stayed on site." Although the project took longer to complete using the new method, the savings far outweighed the inconvenience. The project saw a price tag of $987,400, but Mr. Wilson esti- mated it would have been high- erifnew materials were used. He noted no waste was hauled away to a dump and no gravel was purchased. This saved in both the transporta- tion costs as well as the costs for aggregates. "It's a win-win situation in thelongrun,"" he said. 30 Water Street, Port Perry 985-4316 DON'T BE DISAPPOINTED ORDER YOUR FRESH TURKEY NOW FOR CHRISTMAS! "We were determined to do the projectin an environmental- ly sensitive way to ensure little waste was taken to the dump site," he said. "The way we do business is that environmental issues are important." his will be the focus of future projects for Durham as it moves towards an agenda of environ- mentally sensitive work. The works department will continue to look at projects that will serve to protect the envi- ronment in the future. Mr. Wilson said the philoso- phy was not new, but the ability to use recycled materials is. The availability of the equipment enabled them to move in that di- rection. Being a fairly new idea, it was 'also a pilot project. Mr. Wilson said all aspects of the project will be looked at from cost to re- action from the public. And it appears the project has been well received. He has re- ceived a number of comments from area residents concerning the project. "Phis has been for me one of the most enjoyable projects to work on," he said. "We like to have an open process in working on the road and we like to be sensitive to concerns and if eve- rybody can walk away happy, then it's the perfect project."
