To the Editor: With reference to letters pub- lished from S. Neale and C. Sturman which lambast Dr. Tom Millar's recent 'tongue in cheek" letter on local hooligans. Tom Millar is a jovial and much respected family practi- tioner. He and his wife are very talented, unselfish and gener- ous with their time and resourc- es, It now seems that residents of Port Perry cannot point out that these thugs and bullies have "puerile minds" without fear of cowardly, violent at- tacks. That's terrorism on Port Perry Streets. Ms. Sturman's proposed forced work program appeals to my basic instinct. The thought of these miscreants coming un- der a Regimental Sergeant Ma- Jor has me all fired up to back a call for the return of conscrip- tion. Why stop there, let's put the little blighters on a chain gang. How many bureaucrats would it take to set up such a program? Don't you think there are thousands who deserve the opportunity of work far more than these wasters? And who is going to end up paying for it anyway? That's right, the same folks who get their property vandalized. As an employer I would be more likely to hire a candidate who had shown the self- motivation and self-discipline of belonging to our Cadets or one of the dozen or so local church youth groups rather than one who had to be forced out of bed in the morning and who would rather hang around malls or streets at night. Too late Canada is waking up to the realization that work is a "privilege - the world owes no one a living - and we are a coun- try of redundant factory work- ers. Future winners will be in- novators and entrepreneurs. This requires creativity, imagi- nation, initiative, team work and the ability to follow through on a project. Qualities devel- oped in Millar Lights, Cadets, etc. but rarely. nurtured through socialist type work pro- grams. "Millar Lights is not just a "teen activity." Every aspect from stage construction, make up, costume design and mak- ing. backstage. marketing and production involve volunteer parents, siblings and friends. It's a real community. It's fami- lies working, communicating and having fun TOGETHER with a common goal, building relationships that will last a lifetime. Plenty of thrills and no boredom, guaranteed, (no profit and no cost to the participants). In her earlier letter Ms. Neal criticized the $12 price of a "Wizard" ticket. Has she recent- ly checked out the cost of a downtown theatre seat? I gather that most of the pro- ductions at the Town Hall will cost more this year. This is to save Scugog taxpayers carrying the full burden for recent reno- vations. This good man and his protege are actually raising funds to save your taxes, pre- serve a historic building and a valuable community amenity. Judging by the speed at which the tickets sell out and the rave reviews each year, it strikes me that Millar Lights' productions offer the best entertainment value for miles around. What is a vandal anyway? A coward brought up with the pol- itics of envy; a spiteful person who inflicts the maximum wan- ton damage and injury that they believe they can get away with. A lot in common with those who have recently written malicious, poison pen letters. With their "uncalled for" char- acter assassinations, they too inflict the maximum, spiteful, injury that they believe they can get away with. Not to mate- rial property, but to reputations and emotions. Naturally a child will grow into a vandal if he/she is nurtured in a home that has so much suppressed bitterness and ill will towards others. Ms. Sturman suggests that the rea- son her offsprings are obnox- ious, "rebellious, disrespectful and rude" is that the schools, law makers and society are at fault. May I suggest that the old cliche, "the fruit never falls far from. the tree" may hold far more truth Madam. Going by the report cards that many of our kids bring home some of us are managing to raise co-operative, focused, pleasant youngsters who do re- spect others property and are polite. In being so liberal with the letters the editor publishes, he effectively hands the spiteful a very long rope with which they hang themselves, but sadly cause much griefin the process. The recent example of the Conservative campaign ad that made a vicious personal attack on Mr. Cretiens' speech impedi- ment should have been a lesson that the public are discerning and respect those who debate is- sues intelligently, but find vitri- olic personal attacks contempti- ble. Three of the seven letters published last week were in protest against its poison pen letters. Up to last week no letter had plummeted to the malevolent depths reached by Ms. Carol Sturman with her low blow against Tom and Catherine Mil- lar as a childless' couple, Ms. Sturman and her offensive co- horts might regain some credi- bility and respect amongst their neighbors by making their next "letter to the editor" an apology to theirintended "victims."
