aT. ep po pr So mi "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 14,1993 - 15 Changes Initiated From Page 13 females said they see writing as being important to their future goals, while only 32 per cent of the males felt that way. "We have to make writing more meaningful to the boys," Mr. Morrison said. Other items listed in PPHS's action plan include encouraging all teachers (regardless of sub- Ject) to stress the importance of writing; encouraging the publi- cation of student work; use of holistic marking scales; 'and en- couraging °* more job- related writing within the English de- partment. Scugog Trustee Bobbie Drew said the writing review was a valuable exercise and she is happy with both the local and regional results. "I'm glad we went into the process," Mrs. Drew said, add- ing the board has already ini- tiated changes to the English program based on the results of the review and has decided to conduct a similar writing re- view with Grade 12 students next year. Although happy with the re- sults, both Mrs. Drew and the local school officials questioned the provincial ministry's expec- tations for advanced-level stu- dents, saying it may have been too high. "There's nothing wrong with having high expectations," Mrs. Drew said. She noted several elements, though, that could have had an affect on the ad- vanced level results. "Not all students taking ad- vanced-level courses are ideally suited for (thatlevel),' 'she said. Also, the review revealed that advanced-level students across the board prefer to write at home, while general- and basic- level students say they prefer to write in class. Clarification In a recent article in the Port Perry Star concerning a meet- ing with Mayor Howard Hall and Natural Resources Minis- ter Howard Hampton, it failed to note the role Durham East MPP Gord Mills played in the meeting. Not only was Mr. Mills resent during the meeting, but he was instrumental in arrang- ing the meeting. The Port Perry Star apologiz- es for this oversight.
