Ra 22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 14,1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice p Weoois News of interest to our rural neighbours in Scugog Township LLL Epsom Public School students were treated to a concert of Christmas music by the Prince Albert Public School band and choir on Friday, Dec. 10 at Epsom Public School. Christmas Eve service at church Wow, what a change in the weather. The river has frozen nice and smooth so far, so hope- fully we'll see lots of skaters this winter. Mind you, I hear it is supposed to get warm next week, so you never know. Be- lieve it or not, I saw people in Port Perry today walking way out on the ice and some had skates on...sure hope it is safe! This Friday all the children are finished school for the holi- days so Merry Christmas to all the bus drivers who do a Great job getting our kids back and forth to school safely. Again, another reminder we still need a Block Parent repre- gentative for the Village of Sea- grave. This is such an excellent cause and believe me, it does not take up much time. If you have two or three hours a month, maximum, you can gpare, please give me (Ann San- diford) a call at 985-9440. It sure is nice to see all the Christmas lights starting to be put out. The area is certainly starting to look "Christmassy. Get well wishes this week go out to a couple of people. First Mildred Puckrin...sure hope you are feeling better. I have spoken to Mildred a couple of times this week and she sound- ed awful, with a bad cough and cold. While on the subject of Mildred, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mil- dred very much for her contri- bution to the Seagrave News. Mildred calls either Diane or myself faithfully every week with the Seagrave Church News. I don't think she has ever missed calling us. It is really a great help and we both appre- ciate it very much. Thank you. Also get well wishes to my husband Bill who is home from Sunnybrook Hospital after some surgery. He has recovered well and says he is feeling just like new! Seagrave Church News The McGarry family lit the third candle of joy. The choir sang "Ring out the Bells for Christmas". Rev. Shepherd spoke on "How Great Our Joy". Next Sunday, the advent can- dle of love' will be lit. The Christmas Eve service is at 7:30 p.m. at the Seagrave United Church. Hope to see everyone out for a holiday ser- vice. The Seagrave Sunday School Family Christmas was well at- tended this past Sunday eve- ning. The teachers and children presented a very enjoyable pro- gram. Alex Ingram and some of his music students also enter- tained. That's it for this week. Christmas Cc ing, which makes many of us re- Florence Ashton It surely puts me in the Christmas spirit as I watch car after car drive away with their Christmas tree from the Mur- cott Farm. I'm sure everybody was having a fun time with their family in spite of the cold weather over the weekend. By all reports I hear that the church hall was packed on Fri- day night as the Community Centre presented their annual Christmas Concert. I'm sure all the dads and moms and grand- parents were out to watch their young people perform. All the children seem to have an extra glow and excitement in their Congratulations to Bob and Kay Walker who live on Union Ave. on celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary. The U.C.W. met at the home of Betty Deeth in Port Perry for the Christmas Pot Luck Supper and meeting. About 20 ladies attended. linda McMillan and Ilean Pugh led the Christmas devotion followed by singing Christmas carols with Eva Hunter playing the piano. Be- - ---------- oncert enjoyed by many faces with Christmas approach- flect on our younger years when we eagerly looked forward to performing in the annual Christmas Concert held in our former church. Last Tuesday evening, the members of the W.M.S. and La- dies Bible Class with their spouses and friends enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner at the Western Spurz Restaurant at Manchester. Following several came back to Doug and Florence Ashton's home and enjoyed lis- tening to Christmas carols and a fun time together. On Sunday, the Sunday . School pupils with their par- ents, teachers and friends gath- ered in the church hall for carols and a lovely pantomine present- ed by the children. Muffins and coffee were served, and candy treats for the children John and Barbara Barfoot lit the candle of joy at morning worship, being fore closing a decorated birth- day cake was brought out and happy birthday sung to Flor- ence Smith who will be 90 later this month. Dorothy Hope pinned on a corsage and thanked Florence for the years- of work and friendship she has shared with so many. Then eve- ryone gave a favorite memory they had. Cake and coffee were then served to everyone. Thursday evening 11 tables of euchre i: Meio enjoyed them- selves. The winners for the eve- ning: Marie Geer, Doris Red- man, Heidi Krieg, Elwood Manns, Pat Norton, Anne Za- porozan. Lucky draws: Elsie Forbes, Grant Bright, Jimmy Emerton. On Thursday, Dec. 16 will be the special Christmas Euchre. Better health is wished to Jean Martyn who is in Port Perry Hospital. Reta Glasgow is the third Sunday in Advent. The choir rendered a lovely Christmas anthem, The White Gifts which were presented will be delivered to the Men's Hostel in Oshawa with the monetary gifts being sent to Evangel Hall in Toronto. We express our sincere sym- pathy to the Hollingsworth fam- ily in the passing of Mr. Sam Hollingsworth on Friday at Oshawa General Hospital. The funeral will be conducted on Tuesday morning from the United Church, Brooklin. Visiting with Bernice Gard- ner recently were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Graham, Oshawa, Mr. and Mors. Alymer Hood, Stouffville, Mrs. Blanche Taylor, Good- wood, Mr. and Mrs. Bobe Er- vine, Port Perry and Jack Bar- net of Manitoba. I was unable to obtain the eu- chre results for you this week. Hopefully, Iwill for next week. urch service Dec. 19 and 24 now home and improving. It was White Gift Service at church on Sunday and the light- ing of the 3rd Advent Candle. The church will be making up food baskets for three families again this year. The remainder of the canned foods will go to Operation Scugog. Everyone welcome at all servic- es. | When you are out shopping or just taking a tour around to see all the beautiful lights be sure and go down to the second side- road below Prince Albert and turn left and 5 nearly to the Oshawa Rd. The lighting is a wonderful sight to see. Euchre party on January 7 At the Third Sunday of Ad- vent in Greenbank United Church, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hill lit the Third Candle. The Jazzmerize Singers from Port Perry High School brought us a ministry in music. The first hySP mn they sang was "How Great Our Joy," which was also the ti- tle of Rev. Shepherd's sermon. Jill Bradley conducted the sing-song of Christmas carols before the service with her mother, Mrs. Betty Stone at the piano. Jill's daughter Leslie Bradley sang a solo part with the Jazzmerize group. At the Christmas euchre par- ty Friday evening the first prize for the ladies was Anna Beaton, second Jean Hunter, third Ezel- la Hartwood. First prize for the mens was Isaac Smith, second Earla Hill and third was Cliff Road. The 50/50 draw was won by June Bailey. Everyone re- ceived a lucky gift. The next eu- chre party will be on Friday, Jan. 7. . I returned home on Saturday, after visiting my daughter Dale and her husband Ken in Thamesville. 1 enjoyed being with my grandchildren Amy, Lisa and Stephen. They drove me home but visited Dale's brother Larry Trelevan's family in Stroud. On Sunday the fami- ly came to visit with Dale. Bert and Sally Bishop and boys came but Bert's father was buried on Tuesday and to add to their grief his brother-in-law was buried on Friday. Ladies remember the Wom- en's Institute Christmas meet- ing on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 12:30 p.m. This is our pot luck luncheon. Everyone is welcome to come to the McKean's home.
