New brand of hockey Midget Eagles win three or four in week's action The Port Perry Precision Con- struction Midget Eagles had a fairly successful week, winning an exhibition game at the Scu- gog Arena, then taking two of three at the Cobourg Midget Tournament. Monday night, Pickering came to town for an exhibition game and went home on the short end of a 6-1 count. Ian Shrigley opened the scoring just 1:01 into the game, taking a nice feed from Sean Ellis to cruise down the right wing and blast one in from the circle. Lat- er in the period, the same line struck again to put the Eagles up 2-0 when Jay King poked in a short rebound after heavy pressure from Ellis and Shri- gley. Pickering counted one of their own with 15 seconds left, but Kyle Simms and James Pa- terson shut the door after that one. Daryl Bourgeois gave Port the two goal lead again, picking up a short pass from Chad Kearns and breaking away to cut in and put it upstairs. Late in the second, Jason Phillips cashed in on a four-on-four situ- ation to add a pair of goals for the Eagles. The first was a hard point shot that overpowered the goaltender to trickle through, set up by Kearns and Scott Heasman. The second, only 17 seconds later, came when Phil- lips intercepted a pass and broke in to score unassisted from close in. Ellis closed out the scoring late in the game, when he won a faceoff cleanly, stepped around his man, and fired his third point of the night. Saturday, in Cobourg, the Ea- gles got off to a bad start against Lindsay, running into a major penalty problem early, which resulted in a 3-0 deficit after a long series of five-on- three situations. King gave Port life by firing in a Jeremy Geer pass, after some hard checking by Joi Vernon Unfortunately, Lindsay\got that back after kill- ing a wh early in the third, then cashed in on two more power plays as Port pressed. Fi- nal score was 7-1. Kearns was awarded the player of the game shirt. *% The Eagles returned for game two in the ~ point-per- period tournament * with a mathematical possibility to win their division and advance. Armed with this knowledge, Port turned in a strong game against Newmarket in an effort to win all three periods. Ellis got it going on the first shift, blasting a hard shot from the high slot to put Port on top. Phillips and Paterson picked up assists on the play. Kearns dou- bled the margin late in the peri- od, going end to end to chip a short shot by the netminder. Joe Broadworth and Jeremy Norton started the play in their own end. Early in the second, Ellis scored another big goal, from Shrigley and Ian McCready to put the Eagles up 3-0. A short lapse after that set Newmarket up for a power play goal, then another quick one to win the period and put the game in jeopardy. With just over two minutes left, Geer ripped a hard shot from be- tween the circles, after Broad- worth's good passout from the corner, to give the Eagles the period, the game 4-2, and four of a possible five points in the game. Ellis' strong game earned him the award shirt. The win sent Port against Stouffville for game three, needing to sweep all three peri- ods to replace the Clippers as division winners. Eagles count- ed quickly on their only power play of the game, when Kearns took a pass from Phillips, then fed Bourgeois at the edge of the crease for a short shot. The Clippers then came back with one of their own, and with goal- ie Paterson on the bench, the Eagles could not get the go- ahead in spite of two faceoff plays and one excellent close in chance by Ellis in the dying sec- onds. Fourteen seconds into the second, Port did go ahead. Bourgeois and Broadworth combined to set up Norton for a big blast from the left side. Only 19 seconds later, Bour- geois counted his second, when Norton knocked down McCready's point shot and tipped it over to Bourgeois for a 3-1 lead. Norton and Phillips then combined to set up Broad- worth for a point shot that got through late in the period. Stouffville scored twice in the third to make the game close, but strong defensive work pre- served a 4-3 win for the Eagles. Bourgeois' two goals, one assist performance gave him the award shirt. Despite not making the fi- nals, the Eagles proved that they are capable of playing a good, winning brand of hockey. ON E &% Dy & 4 NY v The Port Perry rink of Marjorie Jackson, skip, Helen Par- ish, vice, Elaine Cheeseman, second and Edna Brunton lead, captured the A division of Diamond Seniors Zone curl- ing championships on December 7. The team defeated rinks from Oshawa Gulf, Oshawa Curling Club and Whitby Curling Club. The local rink now goes on to compete at the Region- als to be held January 10-12 at Donalda Curling Club. "Scugog 's Community Newspaper of Choice" Tweens nab first league victory Behind the solid goaltending of Lauren Christie, Port's Guar- dian Drug Tween 'A' team proved that last weekend's St. Catharines victories were no fluke. All of your hard skating is paying off, girls. Amanda Wakeford passed to Diane Vanderligt whose wrist shot handcuffed the Pickering goalie. Next, Janna Senyk set up the beginning of Janine Hammond's hat trick. A fine centre pass set up the momen- tum. Usually, penalties cause nothing but harm to any team. (Thanks, Jennifer Elliot, for be- ing a helpful, penalty-free player.) Unusually, Janine Hammond continued her hat trick with her teammates in the sin bin! Alechia Cracknell's sharp pass set up one and Bon- ni-Jo Norton set up a relay through. Amanda Wakeford's pass to Janine Hammond - leav- ing no doubt - a solid 4-1 win over Pickering. These 10 girls have now won four of their last six games, proving that dedication and stamina are the power play. Laura Hooker is emerging as a team leader and Brooke Shan- ley's skating has the fans stand- ing tall. (The 1994 Hamilton Provincials beckon.) Girls, the other team - your bench team - is working just as hard at their stamina and disci- pline. Thanks for working with them. Overhead Doors take show on road On Sunday, Dec. 12 the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee "B" hockey club was completing their home and home series with Lindsay. After a very phys- ical game in Port, everybody was expecting another one in Lindsay but it wasn't to be. Lindsay wasn't hitting as hard and their fans weren't cheering as hard either in their own barn. (Maybe The Tail Does Wag The Dog). Lindsay came out fast taking the play right to Port Perry. Lindsay had Port flat footed and fired a lot of rubber at the Port Perry goal in the early go- ing. LIndsay lit up the score- board first at the 7 minute mark to take the early lead 1-0. Less than a minute later Scott Sanderson took the play in the Lindsay zone, over to Blayne Kinnunen who set up Justin (Cat) Sheehey beautiful- ly as he fired a low hard shot past the Lindsay goaltender to tie the game 1-1. Lindsay scored again at 4:42 to regain the lead 2-1. Lindsay was holding the edge in play outshooting Port Perry 3-1. There wasn't any- more scoring in the first period with Lindsay holding on to a 2-1 lead. Lindsay struck fast when they scored at 13:51 to take a 3- 1 lead. As Otto Weber says, "she's not over till the fat lady sings," and she didn't even have a chance to clear her throat when Port was playing short handed and Ryan McQuade took control in the Port Perry end of the rink, up to David Gai- ney, over to Nick Pelyk who just blew past the Lindsay defence- man at centre and waltzed in on the Lindsay goalie all alone and scored to make it a 3-2. game. Yes!! Don't leave your seat yet folks, this things not over!! At 7:09 Gainey, Campbell and Sanderson, came flying out of the Port Perry zone and David. Gainey put a nice pass up to De- ryk Campbell, over to Scott San- derson as be buried it deep in the Lindsay goal to tie the game at three all. Less than a minute later, Port came at Lindsay again, this time it was Nick Pe- lyk lugging it out of the Port Perry zone, to Travis Pickard, into the Lindsay zone and Blayne Kinnunen wasted no time in making a deposit to give Port the lead 4-3 for the first time in the game. Port's goal- tender was playing well making some key saves. With the period winding down and just nine seconds showing on the clock Lindsay swooped into the Port Perry zone and thank you very much, she's all tied up at 5-6. In the third period both teams cranked er up a notch as the spectators were treated to some nice hockey. Both goalies were facing rush after rush and giving nothing up. David Gai-. ney made a good open ice check at 8:31 to nullify a Lindsay rush. Port was hemmed in their own zone at the 5:22 mark but Lindsay was denied. Port turned it around and formed an attack of their own when David Gainey, Scott San- derson and Nick Pelyk while on the power play played pass the puck well in the Lindsay zone but came away empty when the Lindsay goalie came up big. With time running out Justin Sheehey, Scott Sanderson, and Travis Pickard came within an inch of scoring as the Lindsay goalie covered up. The horn went to end the game in a 5-5 tie. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. Port came away with a well earned tie. Nice game boys. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to David Gainey and Blayne Kinnunen. Ryan McQuade gets the nod for good defensive effort. Next home game is Saturday, Dec. 18 at 7:40 p.m. Come on out and enjoy some good Peewee hockey. Uxbridge vs. Scugog Overhead Doors.
