"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 14,1993 -5 MP says Article 11 has tremendous local impact From page 1 for the future of Article 11, he re- mained optimistic stating "it's hopeful untilit's over." Epsom dairy farmer Doug Wilson is also remaining opti- mistic that a favorable agree- ment can be reached. "I'm basically an optimist. I'm optimistic that our government and the negotiators won't let us down." But like the majority of the farmers, My. Wilson is waiting until the agreement is reached before reacting. He admits not knowing enough about behind the scenes negotiations. He is concerned, however. "All farmers are concerned, and they should be," he said. Durham MP Alex Shepherd is also calling on the Canadian government not to sign the agreement. He has met with both Ralph Goodale, Minister of Agricul- ture and Roy MacLaren, Minis- ter of Trade, on a number of oc- casions in the past few weeks to stress his point. Mr. Shepherd is against sign- ing the agreement on December 15 and is instead calling on the negotiators to extend the dead- line until the new government has had a chance to review the agreement. He argues the problems have been "inherited" by the Liberal government, which have been ongoing for six to seven years. "The bottomline is that we can't sign the agreement on De- cember 15," he said. "I don't think we've properly analyzed it." Mr. Shepherd wants tle ex- tension in order to examine the effects of the agreement on the Canadian farmers. "I guess I would like to go back and do it again. If we had a bet- ter negotiating team we could have done better," he said.
